Year 10 French Excursion

In attempt to broaden our French cultural experiences, the two Year 10 French classes took a guided tour through the National Gallery of Victoria. The guides led us to several paintings and sculptors by French artists, or artists who had spent most of their lives in France.

We travelled through classic realist works, to colourful Impressionism, to modern surrealism and some evocative sculptures by Rodin.

For each artwork, the guide discussed the work and the artist but also the commentary it was offering about the French culture and society at the time. This included the influence of Napoleon as Emperor on classic art, the industrial changes that prompted Impressionism and the political commentary in Picasso's "Weeping Woman".

The students will then follow this discussions into a project with a research and a creative component. For lunch, we visited "Waffle On" on Degraves Lane, a Belgian baguette and waffle shop, owned and run by a McKinnon parent, Mr Marc Laucher. The students ordered their baguettes in French: le Parisien avec jambon, Le Lyonnais avec salami, le Fermier avec poulet etc. Some students treated themselves to a waffle and an Orangina as well.

It was a very enjoyable day soaking up French history and culture in sunny Melbourne.

From the 16th to the 18th of March McKinnon Secondary College had 19 teams competing in the Victorian All Schools Beach Volleyball Championships.

The event is held annually and attracts teams from both public and private schools to fight it out for the right to call themselves the outright best school team for their age in Victoria.

Over three days of competition on South Melbourne Beach we saw a beautiful representation of Melbourne weather experiencing everything from extreme heat to rain and gusts of wind up to 80km/h.

Last year McKinnon finished the event as the 21st ranked school overall in Victoria. In this years tournament Mckinnon has climbed to 4th overall showing the amount of work the McKinnon students have put into their weekly training before school over the past year.

Team success was found by:

Year 7 boys- 2nd ranked team in Victoria
Year 7 girls- 2nd ranked team in Victoria
Year 8 girls- 2nd ranked team in Victoria
Year 8 boys- 3rd ranked team in Victoria
Year 9 boys- 3rd ranked team in Victoira
Year 11 girls- Victorian Champions

The McKinnon Volleyball Squad will now be training for the Victorian All Schools Indoor Championships that will be held early in term three.

9UP Presentations

On Monday 21 March and Tuesday 22 March saw the Year 9s present their findings for their 9UP projects. The students identified a key societal issue they wished to investigate and spent three days in the city testing their hypothesis they created by surveying members of the public and interviewing experts on their topic.

This primary data, along with extensive secondary research was used to create some amazing presentations that delved deep into Melbourne’s attitudes toward their topic.

The presentations were held at school from 7.00pm on each day and the students and staff would like to pass on their most sincere thanks to parents who gave up their evening to watch ALL students present and ask probing questions to get the most out of the students presenting.

Congratulations and thanks to Mr Machin (BYTES Coordinator) and also to all the BYTES mentors who have worked tirelessly with their students to guide them through challenging times. It’s a tremendous learning experience.

Alliance Francaise French Film Festival

On Friday 11 March, seventy-two Year 9 French students along with their teachers set off to Como Cinema in South Yarra. The aim of this outing was to see a French film ‘Belle and Sebastien’ in order to enhance students’ French cultural knowledge and communication skills. The movie is set in September 1945, when everybody is celebrating the end of the war. A young, 10-year-old Sebastien waits with his faithful dog Belle for the return of a friend called Angelina who went missing in the French Alps after a plane crash. On their mission to locate Angelina, both Sebastien and Belle must face peril, risk their lives and confront a secret. The movie was action-packed, exciting and moving. With great characters, spectacular scenery and one very gorgeous dog the French box-office hit certainly entertained our Year 9 students.

After the movie students had time to buy themselves un casse-croûte pour le dejeuner before our return back to school. All Year 9 students are to be commended for their excellent behaviour on the day.

We were delighted to recently host the School's Leadership Summit for the Cathy Freeman Foundation. Student leaders from 35 schools were in attendance to engage with indigenous issues in Australia and what schools can do to tackle the challenges. Cathy Freeman spoke with humility and integrity and our School Captains also represented the school wonderfully by engaging with all our guests. A big thank you to Phil De Young (board member for the foundation and ex Principal of Carey Grammar) who facilitated the day.

State Swimming Championships

On 19 April, thirteen students represented the college at the State Swimming Championships.
This is the biggest team we have ever had at the state level.

Maya Hammam, fresh off winning Gold at the Australian Age Championships, swam very well winning two Silver (50m freestyle and 50m butterfly) and one Bronze medal (100m butterfly). It should also be celebrated that Maya won the Bronze medal competing against swimmers 4-5 years older. The future is bright.

Will Sharp, also a medallist at the Australian championships, became SSV champion in the 50m backstroke and 50m butterfly events. He also collected a Silver medal in the 50m freestyle, beaten by just 0.20 of a second.

He then joined his teammates (Daniel Gershenzon, Aaron Khominsky and Jacob Gray) for the 12-14yrs medley relay. The boys fought hard against Maribyrnong High School who went on to break the state record by 2 seconds. The boys won a Silver medal in a time of 2.14.55.

In the freestyle, the boys had their revenge. This time the team of Will Sharp, Alan Tang, Daniel Gershenzon and Jacob Gray pulled out a blistering time of 1.59.75, only missing the state record by 3 seconds and beating Maribyrnong by over 5 seconds. A Gold medal was received to finish the day. Will Sharp finished the day with three Gold and two Silver medals.

On a day of records for McKinnon, it was also our best team result finishing in 6th place overall on the day.

We wish all the students participating in state diving all the best on Wednesday 20 April.

Antips Abroad Practice Hike

In preparation for our trip to Vietnam and China in June, the Antips group went on a 'Training Weekend' from Saturday the 20th to Sunday the 21st of February. The weekend was spent in the bush lands at Kinglake River Wilderness Camp.

The training involved a physical component to simulate the four day hike through China's Tiger Leaping Gorge. We hiked around 15-17 kilometres on a very warm day, getting a better understanding about staying hydrated, the need for comfortable hiking books, staying together as a group, leadership and communication.

There was also training in regards to health and safety when travelling through Asia, simulations around what to do in case of emergency (loss of passport, broken legs, lost group member). The third focus was on planning our itineraries for each of the two groups. Both groups are hiking in China, completing a community project in Vietnam (building a classroom or a house for communities in need) and some relaxation in Halong Bay.

Throughout this weekend, both groups worked closely with their leader from Antips (Juan with Team 1, Jess with Team 2) and got to know their travelling group. There will be another training day closer to our departure. This will take place in the city with scenarios about transport, budgets and time limits.

Model United Nations Conference

REWRITE THE FUTURE: THE RIGHT OF EVERY CHILD TO UNIVERSAL PRIMARY EDUCATION
The second McKinnon Model UN was held on Friday 22 April 2016, in collaboration with the UNAA (Victorian Division). Students from Glen Eira College, Keysborough College (Banksia and Acacia Campus), Kilvington Grammar, Mentone Girls Grammar, Noble Park Secondary College and Norwood Secondary College joined a group of McKinnon students to represent the countries they had been assigned to. The topic Rewrite the Future: the Right of Every Child to Universal Primary Education was prepared for from the countries’ perspectives. In several additional preparation sessions and during the conference students slipped into the roles of UN delegates for a day. The additional commitment of time and effort - they also needed to prepare an opening statement on their country’s position in regards to this topic - was outstanding.

The Conference opened with a speech from Wendy O'Brien, a Board member of the UNAA who specializes in the children’s rights, presented facts, worldwide statistics and examples of child soldiers and child labour to the students. The UN assembly of the day was led and instructed by the General Secretary, Mr Ian Howie, UNAAV Vice President and Adjunct Professor, International Studies, RMIT University, who instructed students about procedures and formalities during this conference. Students had to draw on negotiation and diplomacy skills to ensure their views were heard. They had opportunities to present their position to the assembly, negotiate with other ambassadors in caucus sessions and learned to move amendments to the Resolution. Consensus had to be found and the final Resolution was put to a vote.

The engagement of students in key international human rights and social justice issues could be observed throughout the day and the praise of the General Secretary for the students’ thorough preparation and conduct in this event is credit to their incredible effort. I would like to thank Ms Binnion for making this event possible, Mr Kan and Ellen Nichols for the technical support, the facilities team for setting up the hall for the day, the catering team for providing all with morning tea and lunch, and the UNAA team under Conal Thwaite for planning and conducting this event. A special thank you also, to Mr Ian Howie, the General Secretary of the day, who guided students and kept them on task throughout the entire day.

On 25 April the Intermediate Softball Team competed at the Southern Metro Regional Finals at Jells Park.

The team faced Alkira in the their group game, this was an incredibly tense game with only a 1 run lead going into the 4th innings. Olivia Whitehead did some amazing pitching to stop them from advancing into a lead, then with an amazing batting performance the team took a 7 run lead to win the game. This took them straight into the final where they played against Glen Eira. Again another solid performance from all players saw them take out the victory, again by 7 runs.

The team now plays in State Finals on Tuesday 17 May.

Well done to Anna Donnelly, Rose Evers, Lilly Felder, Katerina Gill, Evie Krieger, Sarah Mac Rae, Sophie Muller, Jemma Owen, Lara Ozenir, Amanda Sarikoudis, Lara Van Zyl and Olivia Whitehead.

Unit 1 Hazards and disasters Fieldwork

Year 11 and Year 10 Geography enhancement students completed fieldwork on Tuesday 3rd May on a day when they found themselves in a 'hazard'! Tuesday saw bright sunshine but also wind gusts up to 60-70 kmh putting the level of risk from flying debris high but also allowed them to understand the risks that a wind storm such as that combined with sea level rise could inflict on Elsternwick Park, Elwood canal and Elwood beach in the future.
Students completed a range of geographic data collection techniques such as surveying locals about their opinions regarding sea level rise and the possible threat they could experience. Students were able to determine the areas at most risk and also look at some of the responses to mitigate flooding that the City of Port Phillip have developed. All in all a very interesting and informative day with no negative impacts from the hazardous winds that a good hair brush might be able to fix!

On Friday 29 and Saturday 30 April, 1,320 students gathered on the school ovals for the fifth 24/7 Relay Challenge. This year, students were raising funds for The Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation, State Schools’ Relief and the McKinnon Secondary College Building Fund.

This year we had four staff teams, over 250 parent volunteers and thirteen local businesses that had either donated prizes, money or volunteered their time.

Highlights this year included two VIP guests, Alex Rowe and Jeff Riseley Australian Olympians from the VIS, the staff band, ‘Duck and Cover’ returned this year new and improved, playing a 45-minute set to a packed oval, the special electronic batons and mats, that counted every team’s laps, a silent movie, the football and seven hours of rain. Wow what a busy year it has been!

There are four main prizes this year; most laps, best dressed, most courageous and most money raised. The most laps was won by ‘We Thought They Said RUM', who ran 520 laps of the oval, completing over 306km which equates to an average of 43km per person, they nearly ran the distance of a marathon! The other three team prizes will be decided and awarded at a later date.

Thank you to all the parents and local businesses that helped out this year. Without you we wouldn’t have been able to run this event successfully.
