State Cross Country

On Thursday 14th July, McKinnon’s finest endurance athletes made the journey across town to Bundoora Park for the SSV State CrossCountry Championships. We were represented by 12 athletes from Years 7 to 12 on the day and came home with 2 silver medals, 5 top 10 finishes and a number of personal best times.

In the Under 13 3km events we were represented by May Landau (17th position 11:17mins) and AdamPaliatsos (67th 11:10mins).

In the Under 14 3km events we had some huge results with Genevieve O’Brien finishing just out of the medal
positions (4th 10:31), and Will Sharp taking out the silver medal (2nd 9:08)

In the Under 15 3km events Eleanora Gilbert (48th 12:17) and Jason Clayton (4th 9:02) both had superb runs, with Jason just missing out on the Bronze medal in a sprint to the finish line.

In the senior girls, Sophie Highnam (6th 10:51) and Freya Parker (39th 12:12) both had solid runs and finished with great times. The 5km events completed the day, with our Under 16 boys Lachie Arniel (40th 17:35), Josh Boul (45th 17:41), and Alex Boul (48th 17:42) running together for the entire race and picking up plenty of positions in the final kilometre.

In the final event of the day, McKinnon running superstar William Ockenden smashed his 5km event to finish
2nd in a time of 14:40 for the 5 kilometres. Well done to all the runners who represented McKinnon this entire CrossCountry season, and good luck in the upcoming Athletics season that we now turn our attention to.

Soccer Stars

McKinnon’s finest football (soccer) stars flying high!

Year 11 soccer star Melina Ayres has recently been selected in the Young Matildas’ squad to represent Australia at this month’s 2016 AFF Women’s Championship to be held in Mandalay, Myanmar from 26th July - 4th August.

Melina, was a member of Melbourne City’s Championship winning W-League squad for the recent season of 2015/16.

Melina’s season began in spectacular fashion scoring a 90th minute goal in Melbourne City’s first ever match in the National competition. She was also a substitute player in City’s winning Semi Final W-League match against Brisbane Roar. She has recently signed on again with Melbourne City, and we look forward to watching her career progress further this season. Good luck representing Australia in the Matilda’s team Melina, and also in the W-League this season.

Year 12 boys Theo Papageorgiou and Lior Kalisse have been selected to represent Victoria at the Australian School Sports Championships to be held in Perth next month between 20th-26th August.

Theo playing for his former club Oakleigh Cannons, had a fantastic season of Senior Football playing for the Cannons as they progressed through to the Quarter Finals of the nation wide professional knockout competition, the FFA Cup.

Lior also plays in the National Premier League, however for rivals Port Melbourne FC. We wish both the boys all the best in the tournament next month.

Our final football star story involves Year 10 Teresa Morrissey, who has also been selected to represent Victoria at the Australian School Sports Championships in Perth. Teresa is only 16 years of age, but will represent Victoria in the Under 19 National Championships which is a tremendous achievement.
Teresa is a goalkeeper playing for NTC (National Training Centre). We wish her luck in the Championships next month.

Intermediate Boys and Girls State Netball

On July 22nd, the Intermediate boys and girls netball teams competed in the state championships.

The boys team qualified for the finals later this year finishing 1st in their pool against some tough competition but played terrific all day to finish 1st.

The girls team came agonisingly short of first place with a loss at the start of the day to the eventual winners! They played a spirited 2nd half of the day and didn't lose another game...

Well done to all participants!

Break Dancing Stars

Our two B-Boying breakdancers Huy Anh Nguyen and Yohei Hidano represented the college at the Interschool Breakdancing competition held at Melbourne High recently.

Both B-Boys registered in the 1 on 1 and the 2 on 2 competitions.
Unfortunately both boys found the 1 on 1 battles extremely tough with Anh meeting the champion of the competition in the first round!

The boys joined forces for the 2 on 2 competition.  They met Melbourne High School B team in the Top 8 and won! In the semi final they convincingly beat Melbourne High School Team A crew 3-0 in a straight win. Ahn and Yohei  were in the Grand Final!  Competing so well with their tricks the judges couldn't separate the teams and the final was called a draw.  This meant Ahn and Yohei went to an extra round in a tie break battle.  Sadly they couldn't win the tie break round and came a very honourable second.

Below are the links to the photos of the competition,
Look out for the Melbourne High School Youtube video.

Congratulations again boys, the college is extremely proud of your efforts and are thrilled that as International students you have enjoyed representing the college in interschool sport.

We look forward to see the B-Boys performance at general assembly during Asia Week !

Cuba Music Tour

Setting off at 3am in the morning, the excited Senior Stage Band left the freezing weather in Melbourne and set off for Cuba, where we were thankfully greeted by warm, sunny weather.

After leaving Melbourne on the Monday 20th of june, we began our 4 flights over 40 hours, only to arrive in Cuba still on Monday the 20th of June. We started off in Old Havana where we began learning about the culture and history of Cuba with our tour guide Mario and Louis, our bus driver. Walking through the town was almost like stepping back into the 1950s, as many buildings were colourfully painted, setting the scene with dozens of  beautiful vintage cars driving the streets .

Having taken a day to adjust, the group was thrown straight into a week of performances. Packing our bags and cases on the bus, we set off for other major cities around Cuba: Cienfuegos, Trinidad, the coast island Cayos Las Brujas, Santa Clara and Remedios.

As we travelled, we were privileged to perform with local musicians at their schools, art galleries and town squares. Our stage band brought a wide selection of instrument pieces, vocal charts and, of course, Topsy, Mr Kan’s favourite piece. Performing with local cubans  also provided a great opportunity to become fully immersed in Cuban culture and to enjoy their music and salsa dancing.

But our tour didn’t just include performances for the band, it was also an opportunity to learn about this country. Whether the band were taking a class in salsa or learning pickup lines in Spanish, there was always some exciting way for everyone to immerse themselves in the local culture. After two weeks, everyone had fallen in love with Cuba, whether it was their music, their hospitality or their enthralling history.

Unfortunately, this amazing experience  in Cuba had to come to end. After enjoying our last dinner with the numerous people we had met and mingled with over the past fortnight, we said farewell, packed our bags. Then, waking up at 3am  and prepared for the another monstrous 43 hours of travelling  back home.

We’d like to once again thank Mr Serebrianik, Ms Pryor and Mr Kan for the great effort they put into taking care of the group throughout our travels. We hope you enjoy this video we prepared of our time in this amazing country.

Year 7 Girls and Boys Badminton

Congratulations to our Year7 boys Michael G , Dylan Mc , Terry T , Haans and Stephan M  who are the 2016 Southern Metro Regional Champs.

Luck was on their side today. In the pool rounds they beat Keysborough 4-2 but just narrowly lost to  McClelland SC by 1pt .

The winner of the pool came down to percentage and McKinnon boys had the best for and against. They then progressed to the final against Glen Eira beating them 6-0!

They now progress to the state finals on 13th September - good luck boys!

Special mention to Dylan McDonald who was undefeated for the whole day in all his singles and doubles !

The girls had an enjoyable day but found the competition too fierce losing their pool games to Keysborough and Frankston

Congratulations on a great day and being fabulous ambassadors
Go McK !!

Girls Football

On Thursday the 28th of July, 17 girls piled into a bus trying to escape the freezing cold winter morning.

Ready to face the challenging day ahead, the mood in the bus was excited yet focused. For many of the girls this was the first time that they will play footy, for others this was an annual occasion.

After a 45 minute bus ride to J & P Cam Reserve, Cranbourne, the girls were ready.

The first match against Keysborough was a tough one, with them arriving late, giving us a 6 goal lead and subsequently the win.

With the first game under our belt, the team was ready to face our number 1 rivals, Frankston/Mornington. A 2 hour break between our first game and the next meant an analysis of Frankston’s leading players, including 2 state players!

We had a gruelling 40 minute game, but unfortunately finished below Frankston and missing out on a chance in the finals. We put up a good fight and everyone put in all their effort which really shone through in the game. We’d like to give a massive thank you to Mr Verlin for coming out and coaching us on the day and holding some quality training sessions.

Intermediate Girls Soccer

The Intermediate Girls Soccer Team headed down to Cheltenham on 25 July to take on the other divisional winners in the Southern Metro Regionals.

The day got off to a slightly rocky start when we rolled into the venue to be greeted by a fire engine and a police car. However, after twenty minutes of wondering whether or not the tournament would go ahead, the fire officers declared the small fire at the back of the clubhouse building had not affected its structural integrity, and the games were free to get underway.

The pool games saw McKinnon pitted against Dandenong and Mornington.

In the first game against Dandenong we kicked with a fierce breeze at our back. After a couple of near misses Teresa Morrissey opened the scoring from long range. She doubled the lead shortly after with a goal that is becoming something of a special for her - Antonin Panenka gave his name to the chipped penalty, Johan Cruyff gave his name to the Cruyff Turn and, in the intermediate girls team at least, the corner that goes directly in will become known as the Teresa. After ensuring the team made it through the Kingston competition in May by scoring directly from a corner, she did it again at the SMR. Even though we were leading 2-0 at half time, we had to defend grimly against the wind in the second half. Schuyler King marshalled the defence expertly and Angel Lignos in goals dealt with the balls that did come through to ensure that our day got off to a successful start.

Winning our first game meant we could watch the other two teams in our pool take each other on before we took to the pitch again. The 1-1 draw they played meant that draw or win against Mornington and we played off for a spot at the State Finals. The wind again played its part and the game was largely played in Morningtons half as they attacked with it in the first half. We played attritional football as we sought to maintain our clean sheet and make sure Anthea Dimas, who had stepped into goals for this game, did not have many difficult saves to make. Even though we did have the wind in the second half, we still struggled to create any clear scoring chances. The 0-0 draw was, however, enough to send us through to the final against Gleneagles, who had won the other pool.

In the Final, McKinnon had first use of the wind which was still blowing just as strongly as it had all day. The game was, however, more end-to- end than the other games we had played. We knew we needed to score with the wind but time ticked away as Gleneagles won a series of corners. We did continue to defend resolutely as we had all day. With only seconds remaining in the first half, we did finally score. Anthea Dimas; throw near half way eluded the defender and Chloe Sloman drove with the ball down the line. A shimmy and some deft footwork sent her free and the Gleneagles centre back that had thwarted much of our attacking play throughout the half was drawn out towards her. As she came, Chloe slotted the ball past her and into Jemma Owens run. A good first touch opened up the goal and her shot was just wide enough of their keeper for the ball to head towards the inside of the post as their defence scrambled back to try and prevent it sneaking in. To our relief and jubilation the ball hit the inside of the post and nestled in the back of the net. 1-0 to McKinnon but half a game against the wind still to come. As we had all day, however, we defended grimly against the wind, clearing our lines and not taking any chances near their goal. While it was not pretty, it was effective and for the third consecutive game our defence held strong.

Congratulations to all members of the team and a special thank you to both Anthea and Angel for sharing the goalkeeping duties. We did not concede a goal all day which was testament to both keepers and the way the team defended in front of them. We now look forward to the State Finals next month.

Senior Music Concert

On the evening of Tuesday 21st June in the Alan Lawrence Theatre, McKinnon’s VCE music students hosted the Year 11 & 12 Music Performance Concert. The concert was a fitting conclusion to a semester of hard work and impressive dedication to refining performance craft.

The audience were captivated by the diverse range of performances; from Mozart to Dire Straits, from 18th century music to music written this year. All performers demonstrated impressive musicianship and despite the nerves, showed exceptional composure and flare.

Congratulations to all the Year 11 and 12 VCE musicians on a wonderful night and we look forward to seeing them perform again in semester 2!

Cuckoo Restaurant Excursion

The Cuckoo Restaurant and the beautiful town of Olinda again welcomed McKinnon SC on the annual Cuckoo Restaurant German excursion. More than 200 students left McKinnon on Thursday the 4th of August. Winding through the Dandenong Ranges, we arrived with German punctuality at the famous Cuckoo Restaurant.

Students learning German from Years 8 through to 12 had the privilege of eating, dancing, singing and celebrating Bavarian culture. Pommes and Schnitzel were consumed in great quantity and yet students still miraculously found room for desserts such as Zwetschgenkuchen, Bienenstich, Eis, Pfannkuchen and Schokolade.

Our students represented themselves and our school incredibly well. The restaurant staff even labelled this group the best school group that had come through in years.

While students returned home with full stomachs and ‘food comas’, they also returned with a sense of the sheer size of the German-learning cohort. Their enthusiasm for learning about the German language and its cultures was infectious and left everyone excited about going again in August 2017.

Su Oh at the Olympics Tonight!

Brace yourself McKinnon. As if sitting back and watching Aussie athletes competing in the Olympics wasn’t exciting enough, well now we have some of McKinnon’s very own to enjoy in Rio.

Su Oh, class of 2014, will represent Australia in the Women’s Individual Stroke Play (Golf) over 4 days beginning at 8:30pm AEST on the 17th August.

Su Oh, the 20-year-old from McKinnon, leapt 22 spots in the women's Rolex Rankings after her tied-eighth finish in the Women's PGA Championship, the LPGA Tour's second major of the season, near Seattle.

Su, the 2014 Australian Ladies Masters Champion, is the world No. 40, and for the first time ever, is ahead of Australian legend Karrie Webb at No. 53. Perth's Minjee Lee, at world No. 13, will join Su in the two-person team.

If you want to personally wish Su the best of luck you can leave her a fan message at the link below:

http://rio2016.olympics.com.au/athlete/su-hyun-oh/media/message

As a community we wish Su all the very best, and will be cheering hard for her to bring home a medal.

Intermediate Boys Baseball

After winning through three stages of competition, the Intermediate Boys Baseball team made it through the the state finals.

There were some tough games on the road to the State Finals, winning in extra innings against a talented and determined Cheltenham Secondary College in the Southern Metro Finals.

On Wednesday 25th May, the 15 boys travelled to Gilbert Park in Knoxfield to play off against the best in the state and to hopefully make it through to the final game of the day.

This was done with relative ease, despite some tough innings during the day. The scores against the opponents ended up being "a lot to a little" but only after McKinnon batters were able to breakthrough in the later innings of every game.

McKinnon got to the long-awaited final against Irymple Secondary College, from Mildura. The Sunraysia region is exceptionally strong for baseball and their representatives were no exception. Irymple got some early runs due to some clutch hitting and some McKinnon fielding errors. McKinnon found themselves behind but began to catchup in the thrid and fourth innings.

The opposition ultimately prevailed, however, the game was very hardly fought and many of our inexperienced players got some key hits to go along with the spectacular batting performances from Josh Meyer and Jarryd Dale.

It has been a long winter since the boys won their Year 7 and 8 state championships but I'm sure there will be another tilt at the title next year.

Mr Cukierman

School Athletics Carnival

With only 9 days before the opening ceremony of the 2016 Rio Olympics, it was good to see so many students embracing the Olympic spirit and taking part in a wide range of events scoring valuable points for their houses.

Highlights from the day included exceptional participation rates in all track and field events, the inaugural year 12 quidditch games seeing teams chase down Mr Carrol on their Nimbus 2000’s, and the 40/40 relay performed in wheelchairs with students raising money for the senior school council to donate to deserving charities.

There were 11 new records set on the day: Lilli Baikie in the 13&U Discus & Shot Put, Genevieve O’Brien in the 14 years 800m & 1500m, Jemma Owen in the 16 years Discus, Jason Clayton in the 15 years 800m & 1500m, Lucas Thompson in the 15 years Long Jump, Jesse Scholz in the 16 years 400m, and, Yotam Kimchi in the 16 years Long Jump and Triple Jump.

These students will join the rest of the Athletics team to represent to school at the Kingston Division Athletics Championships on the 1st September at Duncan Mackinnon Reserve.

Well done to all students who qualified and good luck next month.

Winter Concert

Congratulations to the Head of Music, Ms Megan Papworth and the Music Faculty for their wonderful celebration of music held at the Robert Blackwood Hall last week.

It was indeed a spectacular event that showcased the musical talents of our students. Concerts like these allow students’ talent to be recognised and celebrated!

It also allows our exceptional music program to be shared. It is about participation and excellence and provides a benchmark for schools and students in Victoria.

Thank you to the music staff for the difference they make. I also thank our guests who were in attendance including parents, grandparents and friends, as always.

I have received some wonderful feedback, some examples of which are below.

Thanks for the great evening. Please pass on my congrats to all concerned. Quality performances all round. The demeanour of all the students in the finale (many of them juniors) indicates their respect for their teachers, the school community and how much they value music. Quite inspirational.

Congratulations to your staff & students for another amazing, talent packed evening I take our child’s great Uncle each year and each time out does the previous ...we smile all the way through and feel SO BLESSED again to know that our child is part of this wonderful school community at McKinnon.”

Ex-McKinnon Student Living a different football dream

Nick Porebski, from McKinnon’s Class of 2010, was always an elite athlete in his time at the College. His photo can be seen in the corridors of McKinnon from back when he was a State Champion Springboard Diver. Numerous other athletic awards followed Nick whilst at school, but it’s what has happened since he has left our school that will feature in this piece.

Nick, like a growing number of Australian footballers, decided to chase a dream of professional football and education in the United States. He started at Snow College in Utah where he completed his Junior College, represented their 1st team and was awarded the honours of “1st Team All-Conference” and “National Junior College Athletic Association 1st Team All American”. Amidst all the football, he also managed to graduate with an Associates of Science Degree.

In 2015 Nick was hot property. He was offered multiple scholarships to play at big colleges all across America and finally decided to sign with the Oregon State University. His opening year with the Beavers was outstanding, playing in all 12 games and being named to the Pac-12 All-Conference Honourable Mention Team. He was also a semi-finalist in the Ray Guy award which is a national award for the best punter in College Football.

The future looks extremely bright for Nick as he chases his dream of graduating from College and being drafted as the next Australian punter in the National Football League. Good luck, Nick.

Deakin: Illuminate Business Challenge

Seven year 10 students, filled with enthusiasm and determination, set off on an endeavour to compete against 13 teams from other schools around Melbourne in the Illuminate:NextGen. We were there to design the best social enterprise.

Our team (comprised of the fabulous Lee-Ling Bristow, Anthea Guerra, Joshua Nai, Ryan Basser, Grace Sporton, Eva Lu, and Johnson Sarcasm Duong) created Bambook, a social enterprise that aims to help provide children in Niger with better education by giving schools  books, stationary, teachers and classroom. We would raise the funds to do this through the sales of our environmentally friendly bamboo pens, which we would sell in Australia.

Over the five days at Deakin University in Burwood, teams were required to create and submit 12 tasks! These included creating a detailed business plan, marketing package and a pitch deck presentation.

On Friday, the 27 July, the Bambook team set foot in Deakin for one final time, and after a delicious free meal, left that evening proud to have come fourth place in the competition - only short of reaching third by 0.2%!

Everyone of us had a tremendous experience, from the building of the financial tables (our favourite, of course), having utterly (excessively) passionate “discussions” to the cold morning bus commutes.

The Bambook team would like to thank Mr. Verlin, Mr. Evans and Mr. Fernandez for supporting us throughout the week and giving us the opportunity to participate in the challenge,  Illuminate Education and all the student ambassadors at Deakin for their support.
