German Day Out

$

Year 9 and 10 is a critical time for language learners in Australia. At McKinnon we acknowledge that by taking our German students on the annual German Day Out.

The day begins with a presentation at the Melbourne Town Hall, with many other schools across Victoria in attendance. It concludes with a German film at the charming Forum Theatre.

The Melbourne Town Hall provided the opportunity for students to be as informed as possible about their choices regarding their language learning futures. What became evident was that language learning in Australia is no longer just valuable but it is becoming a necessity.

Students heard from fellow students who had received study abroad scholarships and grants for further study, all of which are available to our students to apply for. They heard from former students who have made outstanding starts to their careers because of their language learning. The message of one particular speaker resonated with our group in particular, “keep at it, as you never know where your life will take you”.

Following the presentation our group ventured through the city for a special screening of “Im Spinnwebhaus” (In the Spider Web House). Being somewhat arthouse in style, many of the students wrestled with the the different themes that were portrayed in the film and when the subtitle track stopped working half way through the film, a murmur grew throughout the audience. However, our students persisted with just the German audio and showed terrific curiosity and resilience. Many students were surprised by how much they had understood and it made for great train conversation on the journey home.

We are confident that this event has informed our students of the critical choices that they will be making in the years to come.

This year McKinnon Secondary College celebrated the 21st Asia Week which occurred during the last week of Term 3.

The week's main purpose is to focus on Asian cultures and includes a wide variety of fun activities such as: staff dress-ups, food stalls and cooking classes, Asian games and sports, as well as a Bollywood workshop for the Year 7s which was very popular. Staff enjoyed various Asian cuisines such as Indian, Chinese and Japanese, and the Year 8s enjoyed a self-defence class.

Various lunchtime activities were held throughout the week: Henna hand painting, Karaoke and Manga. Students were given the opportunity of trying various Asian cuisines such as samosas, sushi, spring rolls and falafels.

Overall, it was an enjoyable week and would not have been possible without the hard work of Mrs Nayyar and the staff.

Victorian Philosothon and Australasian Philosothon

What do you think it means to be human?  Are humans proper stewards of the environment? Is progress perilous? If you’re still thinking about the first question and what a challenge it is to respond to such a big, life question, you’d be right!  Since the start of this year, students who attended Philosophy Club have been pondering such dilemmas during lunch times and after school.  Students from every year level from Year 7 to Year 12 have engaged respectfully in philosophical inquiry to get a better understanding of their planet and their responsibilities to it and one another.

From the Club’s members, 10 students went on to compete in the Victorian and Australasian Philosothons.  This year we had two Mentors for the Victorian event, Juniors Club Captain, Adam El-Horri, and Seniors, Ellen Nicholls, to support the team which consisted of:  Jedd Stein, Chad Aizicowitz, Liam Atchison, Morris Bernstein, Gideon Stein, Avinash Thandaoori, Max Abrahams, and Izzy Blumberg.  Students convened after school every month for three months before the event to share ideas on the stimulus material and listen to and build on perspectives of each other.  This year Professor Laurance Splitter gave up his free time to join our talks in support of the team’s preparation and we’re very grateful for his generosity and sharing his expertise.

McKinnon SC philosophers placed 3rd overall in the Victorian event, securing our place in the 2016 Australasian Philosothon!

But wait, there’s more! As a result of placing 2nd in the state in 2014, McKinnon was invited to participate in the 2015 Australasian Philosothon held at North Sydney Girls Grammar in Sydney. The team consisted of: Max Abrahams, Chad Aizicowitz, Liam Atchison, Izzy Blumberg, Ellen Nicholls, Gideon Stein, Jed Stein, and Avinash Thandaoori. McKinnon philosophers grappled with students from all around Australia on Epistemological, Metaphysical and Ethical questions such as: Should we be able to profit from the sale of organs/body parts? Do numbers exist independently of humans? Should we limit people’s choices if that made them happier? The rigorous daily agendas included four- one hour guest lecturers, and a total of six- one hour community of inquiries.

McKinnon Secondary College was the only government non-selective school in the competition placing 5th overall among the twelve participating schools.
Whilst our students were successful in placing in the top three in the competition, they all agreed that learning and doing Philosophy does not really end with high placement in either state or national competition.  Rather, it is an ongoing, life skill that opens one’s eyes to many possibilities, challenges assumptions, and creates further opportunities for flexible thinking and logical decision making. Oh! let’s not forget the social aspect of talking to one another face to face and initiating friendships.  Our team nominated Liam as the most proficient at this, so next time you see him around campus ask him how he does it!

Thank you to our College’s Principal class, School Council, Jason Jewell, Mark Fernandez, all teachers who refer their students, Parents, Professor Laurance Splitter, the Bursar’s office, and especially to all the burgeoning philosophers whose dedication to challenging themselves to think deeper and more philosophically inspire me every day.  Support for this equal opportunity extension program began as the Philosophy Club (7 years ago!) and has developed to provide opportunities for students in Junior and Senior grades to participate in philosophical inquiry at school, Preshil Student Conferences, VAPS Student Philosophy forums, the Victorian and Australasian Philosothons and everywhere else in-between!

Year 12 Studio Art Exhibition

A night filled with wine, cheese and phenomenal art… This year’s VCE Studio Arts exhibition proved to be a great success.

Held on October 21 in our very own library foyer and accompanying classrooms, it was a night to celebrate all the hard work and talent poured into our individual artworks.

With the tremendous help of Ms Pryor, Rai Jewell and Luisa Marollo, we were able to transform the simple classrooms into an exhibition space which showcased our work in a professional manner. Seeing our art work in such an environment truly transformed each one of us from being just a mere student, into an artist.

Family, teachers and friends were all able to observe and ponder on the various themes, ranging from the stifling effects of fear, to the serene and beautiful essence of nature, and even to the vast, mysterious and wondrous universe.

Overall, it was a night in which we reflected upon our success and hard work throughout this year in Studio Arts. We are all so proud of each other and the effort which has been put into all our works - it has definitely paid off. This has been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity which we will not forget and a class we will dearly miss.

Year 8 Camp

On Wednesday the 21st of October 2015, a record-breaking number of students boarded the buses at 8.00am, eager with anticipation.

The three-hour bus ride was far from boring, as seven buses worth of year eights hurtled through the countryside on the way to Rawson Village Resort, a camp only a short drive from the historic gold-mining village of Walhalla.

Once we arrived, and unpacked, it was straight into activities. Despite the poor weather, Thursday being a maximum of six degrees, most of the Year 8s embraced everything from bowling to mountain biking, even though getting wet and muddy was guaranteed.

Over the next few days, there were challenges and obstacles for every spare minute, such as the commando course, that required dragging oneself through the mud,  beach volleyball, which was far from sunny, and initiatives, which tested the teamwork of entire classes. People with a fear of heights always had something to do, with a climbing/abseiling wall and zipline.

After battling through the rain and the first day’s activities, Mr King and Mr DeSalvo had something special planned for the Year 8s. In the spirit of the season, there was a Halloween rave party thrown where students dressed up in an array of scary, ironic and laughable costumes. After partying away for a couple hours, the Year 8s were sent back to their cabins to prepare for the next day and to sleep.

The Thursday of camp brought more activities, more fun and most importantly the final leg of the 2015 Survivor challenge. Students broke up into their Island groups and participated in challenges throughout Walhalla, a small town that was used for mining back in the 1800s. They had to collect objects and information, all within a certain time period. Although for many it rained throughout the competition, everyone managed to enjoy their time in Walhalla.

On the last night of camp, students were given the opportunity to choose one of three activities to partake in. There was table tennis and messing around in the Rec room, watching the widely loved movie Jurassic Park, or competing in the Trivia night, which was far from any trivia night that anyone had experienced before. It was clear that after having a full day of activities, all students were ready to go back to their cabins and sleep.

As the 2015 Year 8 Survivor Camp neared it’s end on the final day, all the students gathered inside the recreation room, eager to hear about who had won the Survivor competition. There was a slideshow played and lollies were given out to those who had won awards, such as the ‘Abs of Steel’ award or an award for those who faced their fears. At last, the talented 8B was announced as the class winner of the entire Survivor Challenge, and an island group from 8H were awarded with the best individual team.

Overall, despite the unfortunate weather, everybody walked away from the camp with plenty of  memorable experiences. We would like to thank the teachers and staff for making the camp the best that it could possibly be.

On Monday 26th October the 2nd Big Band Bash was held in the Assembly Hall at McKinnon Secondary College.
Our very talented students, featuring all three Stage Bands, with special guests “Let’s Dance Big Band”, provided a memorable evening of musical entertainment.

This event launched fundraising efforts for senior music students tour of Cuba in 2016 and during the night we raised $3400!!

“Cuban Summer” dress up theme offered everyone an opportunity to design very creative costumes both for students and parents. Special prizes were awarded for “best dressed” by our esteemed judges the Senior Stage Band captains.

An appreciative audience enjoyed drinks and nibbles as they watched the performances. There were raffles and various games throughout the night. The large hall had been transformed into a more intimate venue with small tables enhancing the relaxed atmosphere.

Thanks to everyone for coming along to share the evening and support the students. Special mention to Robyn Pryor for designing stage and table decorations to create “Sunset in Cuba” atmosphere and for spearheading fundraising efforts with the support of parents. Great appreciation goes to Nick Xanthoudakis and students’ stage crew for looking after audio and visual requirements of various ensembles.

Also, many thanks to “Let’s Dance Big Band” and their band leader Mick McKeon for their performance at the night, We hope to have them part of our music events in the future.

On Saturday 24th October, school reconvened for some of the former students who have graced the hallways of McKinnon.

Some, like the Class of 1960, who left 55 years ago and the Class of 2010 who departed 5 years ago, were able to take a tour of the school and then meet up with former classmates and teachers - and judging by the noise in the hall, many life stories and school tales were told.

A great night with Principal , Pitsa Binnion welcoming all at the door and all were made to feel very welcome back at their school.

Senior Music Concert

The Senior Concert took place on Tuesday September 15th in the school hall in front of an enthusiastic audience and featured the final McKinnon school performance for many of our talented year 12 students. The concert opened with the Symphonic Wind Band under the splendid baton of Ms Su Rogerson performing selections from their repertoire. A most enjoyable highlight was Dance Fever which had the audience jumping.

Following on was the Orchestra conducted by Ms Tracy Videon with sensational performances of March Militaire Francaise by Saint-Saens andMinuet and Farandole from L’Arlesienne Suite no. 2 by Bizet.

Blanka West directed the Choir in a sublime rendition of “Falling Slowly” from Once featuring a chamber string ensemble. The grand finale of the evening was a glorious interpretation of Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus from The Messiah featuring the choir and orchestra supported by several staff members and a guest appearance by internationally acclaimed singer and past student, Elana Xanthoudakis.

The night was a presentation of marvellous music by the three main core ensembles for senior music students and a fitting tribute to our departing year 12 musicians for their participation and involvement over their time at McKinnon.

Medieval Day

Following on from the earlier success in Semester 1, the Year 8 Medieval Day was incorporated into the Survivor Challenge for Semester 2.  Wednesday October 7 was the day that saw hundreds of Year 8 students dress up as well as their History teachers and it was a great day. There were Kings and Queens, peasants, Vikings, Mongols and many more and it was a delight to see students embracing a good dress up day!

Like semester 1, more was at stake with the points awarded for each activity on the day going towards the coveted and year-long Survivor Challenge.

At a year level assembly the day prior to Medieval Day, Class captains had the task of randomly choosing which particular Medieval theme which would guide their activities for the day.  These included the Black Death, the Crusades, Religion, and Knights and Castles.  Once these themes were announced each class was then required to complete five separate challenges.  These were: a live performance, coat of arms, Medieval trivia, table decorations, and a news report video.  Despite a very limited timeframe, the groups performed incredibly well and produced some amazing work.

The highlight for most students, however, was the Medieval Feast.  But before the eating could begin the challenges needed to be presented.  These were certainly entertaining, as were the judges’ scores and humour. The judges, namely Mr Noble and Mr Hudd dressed as Medieval Monks and they thoroughly entertained the crowd with their sage observations on the performances.  Despite some very close competition, 8H emerged victorious, followed closely by 8F and 8N.

Medieval Day is a great way for both students and teachers to have a lot of fun and promote the enjoyment of learning about History. The teachers thoroughly loved it and their enthusiasm rubbed off on the students.  More importantly though, this event is designed to help students develop and refine key skills that will serve them well in all walks of life.  While undertaking these activities, students were challenged to work effectively in teams by communicating clearly.  Moreover, they needed to demonstrate creativity and to use ICT efficiently to demonstrate their knowledge of a topic.

Thanks to all the students and teachers involved for a great day, particularly Mr Cukierman for organising the day. He looked great as Henry VIII !

Year 11 Legal Studies Excursion

On the 26th of October, the year eleven legal class went to a mock court to learn about how courts are run and the roles that people play during an investigation. Once we made our way to city, we were taken into a mock court, where we were given roles to play during our classes’ mock case called “Respect Me”. This case involved a 14 year old girl, who was maliciously persuaded into sharing explicit photos of herself to her ‘supposed’ boyfriend, who was two years her senior. He then shared these photos both to his friends and on social media, which caused catastrophic consequences for both of them. She had to change schools, and the boy had to face trial for his numerous crimes regarding child pornography.

Each person in the class was allocated a specific role, that was deemed essential to this court case. This included the judge, the clerk, the prosecutor and the accused, and interested members of the public. The trial was carried out just as any other would, with all evidence being presented, and both sides being able to present their case. There were also audio visual presentations that clearly outlined what had happened before the case was taken to court. Our class decided that the boy should receive a community correction order, which would extend over a period of approximately 18 months. However, this does mean that the boy did not receive any conviction, and was not placed on the sexual offenders registry list. We decided that the boy should not receive too harsh a punishment, because he regretted his actions, and was helpful towards police during the gathering of evidence - therefore, we believed his sentence should be mitigated (made less severe).

We as a class greatly benefited from this excursion, as it consolidated our understanding of court procedures and criminal law.

We would also like to thank Mr Evans and Mr Fernandez for taking us on this excursion, and organising such a fun day for us. This is an excursion that will be remembered for many years to come!

Vocal Night

The second Vocal Night was held on October 6 and started off with the McKinnon Choir singing ‘Falling Slowly’ accompanied by the Senior Strings organised by Misha Machlak. Misha also organised the string arrangement himself. They also sang the Madden Bros song, ‘We Are Done’ with our resident rock band, ‘Sons of Daniel’.

Thanks to Demi Hu for accompanying the choir and David Qu for accompanying the senior Singers throughout this semester. The rest of the night went smoothly, one highlight being the comic Gendarmes’ Duet by Offenbach sung by Yr 9 brothers James and
William Hardy. Kira Brooks and Jordan Walters-Brown were able to impress us with their self-accompanying skills and Ava Sillon sang with a soft, real jazzy voice.

The Year 11s and 12s sang beautifully in Act 2. King and Jack in particular stood out with two dramatically strong songs from the musical ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ while Eliana Adler gave us a very expressive rendition of Adele’s, ‘He Won’t Go’.

The evening closed with two numbers by the accomplished Senior Singers, including Lorde’s ‘Royals’.

It was a very satisfying night for all. Thank you especially to Nick Xanthoudakis for his team doing
sound, lighting and film and Andrew Krause for photos. Also thank you to James Hackett-Smith and
the rest of the World Challenge students who provided supper, and to Tess Hodgson and Amy Thit
who were the MCs for the night. As well thank you to Ms Su Rogerson, Paulina Vayenas and King Chen who stepped in at the very last minute to do stage management!!!!
