24/7 RELAY CHALLENGE

Our community truly rallied last week for our 24/7 Relay Challenge.  Community spirit is alive and well at McKinnon.  Money was raised for State Schools Relief.  This is a charity giving access to education for the many vulnerable and economically destitute families from State Schools in Victoria.

This is such a worthy cause that truly makes a difference to the lives of many.  It was indeed a wonderful sight as tent city arose early on Friday morning.

This event highlights the culture of our school. Parents, staff, students and community members working together to bring about such a successful event -
148 teams of 7 students and staff walked or ran for 24 hours. This endurance highlights difficulties.  It was cold during the night but teams worked together to ensure the commitment made was realised.

Staff and parents supervised all night and I thank them for their tremendous support and commitment.

Entertainment from bands and the silent disco and games helped to pass the time and brought much laughter and enjoyment.

Thank you to the following members of the organizing committee who have worked for months planning:  Toren Abramovich, Ellie Adler, Aiyana Alexander, Brittany Arabena, Kelly Aromataris, Jeremy Bowen, Keeley Dang, Sian Evans, Chai Foreman-Sim, Thomas Herterich, Pranav Kalra, Myles Kelemen, Nicole Koloditzky, Sophie Liao, Yilin Lou, Brinda Manogaran, Deanna Manolas, Daisy Milopteris, Amy Moadim-Lesimha, Mia Moadim-Lesimha, Jason Moncrieff, Cara Morgan, Aron Murray, Nicole Olascoaga, Monisha Pal, Charlotte Pentland, Tali Pinkus, Austen Pope, Paul Poulios, Lauren Rosenberg, Hannah Rosenberg, Susan Snell, Gabrielle Steele, Sachin Sureshkumar, Jiawei Thing, Jiawen Thing, Breanna Thomas, Samantha Tonkin, Alexandra Torney, Jenny Tran, Daniel Tritt and Kristen Watkins.  Also a big thank you to staff on the Committee: Georgia Schmidt, Jamie Binnion, Daniel Farthing, James Bridges, David Machin, Phil de Salvo, Emma Mullane, Lauren Mauger and Jenny Pemberton.

Special thanks to Miss Georgia Schmidt, who has been the teacher in charge and a passionate advocate for this cause and Callum Lloyd (Year 11) who has been the key to the success of this event. His leadership, organisational and communication skills ensured the 24/7 was the biggest and best!!

Premier Napthine's visit

Premier Napthine visited our school with Elizabeth Miller, Member for Bentleigh, on Monday the 13th of October. The Premier announced a $9 million commitment for an upgrade at the College. This is wonderful news for the school. This now means that both the Labor and Liberal parties have made a commitment to fund the building of new classrooms for our students and staff. Given the growth of the school, Mrs Binnion has been working tirelessly with the Department and local political members advocating for this upgrade. Her endeavours and persistence has definitely paid off. The funding will go towards a New Year 12 Centre, another double storey wing replacing B & C Block as well as some of the D Block portables. The funding will also include new Music rooms. The school will continue to work with our architects H2o to complete the buildings project.

Asia Week

Asia Week occurred in the last week of term three. The week aimed to address tradition Asian cultures. A range of activities were conducted during the week including Henna painting, lunch time karaoke and Karate training. The array of food ranging from Asian to Indian cuisine was served every day for the week. Classes in the year seven and eight level employed students with Asian language background to teach micro lessons of their language to the class. As well as students, staff participated in the festivities by dressing up in Indian Costume. The whole week would not be possible without the amazing organising by Rekha Nayyar and other staff.

Senior School Handbook

McKinnonNEWS - Issue 15 - October 16th

Philosothon

The Philosothon is in its sixth year at McKinnon. The first Victorian event was in 2009 and McKinnon philosophers in Years 7-12 have participated and enjoyed success ever since. Student philosophers engage in the collaborative philosophical dialogue using the Community of Inquiry based approached. The 2014 McKinnon team of philosophers included: Max Abrahms, Ellen Nichols, Izzy Blumberg, Lena Le, Chad Aizicowitz, Adam ElHorri and Liam Atchison.

In preparation for the event held at the City Cite in Melbourne on the evening of October 22, students met during lunch time and after school to discuss the following topics 1) The Good Life: "Are we entitled to live a good life?", 2) Science and Progress:  "Many people think that humanity has made much progress through developments made in science. Is there something or somewhere we should be heading towards? Can science take us there?" 3)Finding Yourself:"'Know thyself' was once famously inscribed on the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, Greece. What do we mean by 'self'? Is it something we can know?", 4) Freedom of Speech: Is it wrong to say what you think?"

Students collaborated with each other by learning and practicing the skills necessary for philosophical inquiry. As a good English essay has specific requirements of structure and content, so does a good philosophical discussion. For example, criteria used by the Philosothon Judges from Monash and the University of Melbourne, included how well students learnt to build on the ideas of others by listening intently, offering counter-examples to extend perspectives, and asking questions to clarify and come to a better understanding. Naturally, the skills practiced in unpacking the topics for better understanding also included critical and higher order thinking, and creative and caring thinking. It is necessary to explain 'caring' thinking here, as it is caring for the process of inquiry, not solely exercising compassion for fellow inquirers.

Congratulations to our McKinnon philosophers for achieving 2nd place in the 2014 Philosothon and for their enthusiasm in recognizing the value of thinking philosophically outside of the classroom. Please visit www.vaps.vic.edu.au for view the program and  www.philosothon.org for more details on the state and national Philosothons.

Year 10 Market day

On Monday, two classes of Year 10 Business students participated in Market Day. They have worked hard all semester putting together a formal Business Plan to ensure they have the knowledge and know-how to run a successful enterprise.

They also had to complete ‘The Pitch’ to a member of the Principal Team to finalise proceedings. Money will be raised for a variety of charities – from the Heart Foundation, the National Breast Cancer Foundation, the Make a Wish Foundation, the Royal Flying Doctors, the Salvation Army, Diabetes Australia and State School’s Relief.  Students will be measuring their success against criteria set in the plan.

Students have gained many new skills since commencing this hands-on approach to learning. Notably, the ability to work alongside each other in a team environment; and the need for strong communication skills in both a written and verbal context. Students were required to delegate effectively to ensure all work was completed by the due date and they had to interpret and analyse market research data. Financial knowledge was key in keeping costs down and when deciding on pricing strategies. And visual learners were able to tap into their creativity with regards to packaging and logo creation.

Market Day is embedded culturally into the Year 10 Business course here at McKinnon Secondary College as it provides an excellent opportunity for students to engage themselves in a meaningful hands-on project that presents real-life challenges. Good luck to all of this semester’s participants!

Yours in Business,

Mrs Kate Jobson and Mr John Rorke

All Year 7 students visited Zoos Victoria this week to complete outcomes associated with the Year 7 Science AUSvels course.  At Melbourne Zoo students learnt about animal adaptation and classification in zoo classroom sessions and then applied the knowledge to tasks around the zoo.

The Year 7 ELMS students went to Healesville Sanctuary and spent the day researching the needs of some of Australia's most endangered animals.  By the end of the day the students had many great ideas about how we could improve the lot of some of our most vulnerable creatures.

Ideas such as using recycled paper towel and toilet paper reminded all of us that there is a lot we can do in our community to help conserve vulnerable and endangered species.

A great day was had by all.

Year 11 Music Night

On the evening of Thursday 23rd October our twenty-two Year 11 VCE musicians hosted the biannual Year 11 Music Night concert. This  concert is a celebration of the students’ talents and ongoing hard work throughout the year.

The Alan Lawrence Lecture Theatre began to fill as a large and eager audience of family, friends and staff congregated inside. Courtesy of McKinnon’s dedicated audio and visual crew, the transformed theatre looked impressive resembling more of a concert hall than a school theatre.

The impressive trend was echoed as the night unfolded. Opening the concert with a whole class rendition of Lonely Boy by the Black Keys, the class showcased their mature musicianship and cohesiveness as a group. A wide diversity of music followed with solo performances, ensemble performances, band performances, with styles ranging from classical to contemporary. The standard of performance was exceptionally high and a great night was had by all. To conclude this celebration of Year 11 music at McKinnon, the whole class once again took the stage. This time they performed a class arranged of September by Earth, Wind and Fire. What a great night!
