Big Band Bash

On Monday 20th October the inaugural Big Band Bash was held in the Assembly Hall at McKinnon Secondary College.

Our very talented students, featuring all three Stage Bands, with special guests Saxophone Ensemble and Sons of Daniel, provided a memorable evening of musical entertainment.

80s dress up theme offered everyone an opportunity to design very creative and inspirational costumes both for students and parents. Special prizes were awarded for “best dressed” by our esteemed judges Theresa Kirk and Baltazar Kurowski.

An appreciative audience enjoyed drinks and nibbles as they watched the performances. The large hall had been transformed into a more intimate venue with small tables enhancing the relaxed atmosphere.

Thanks to everyone for coming along to share the evening. Special thanks to Tracy Videon and Megan Papworth for decorating the hall and designing trivia questions and to Su Rogerson for being a master of ceremonies on the night.

On Saturday 25th October, in the College Assembly Hall,
previous generations of McKinnon students gathered to meet up with schoolmates and recall their memories of the their time at McKinnon High School / Secondary College.
Upon arrival and the greeting of Principal, Mrs. Binnion, a tour of the College was a must and many were amazed to see the transformation from their time here as teenagers.
We were delighted to have members of “The Originals” with us.

In 1959, they were the first group to graduate from the newly created McKinnon High School, and were warmly greeted by all the other younger groups present.
The youngest group present were the graduation year of 2009 at their first reunion and giving an age span of early 20’s to mid-70’s, and a wonderful atmosphere within the hall. In all, some 300 were able to join us, coming from as far as Darwin to recount fond memories.
We were also fortunate to have past and present teaching staff members with us, including Mr. Andrew Leopold, who taught at McKinnon between 1959-61 and Mr. Ron Smith from the mid-60’s.
The Thistlelonians is the “Ex-Students and Staff Association” and our main aim is to keep the now 60 year old McKinnon community in touch with their friends from younger days and to make all still feel part of, and be proud of, the modern McKinnon SC community.
Our special thanks to the volunteers who worked to make it a grand occasion and this includes many present college administration and teaching staff members who give up their time to enable all to come along and feel honoured to be part of the rich history of McKinnon.

Fashion Culture is an elective that year 9 students can select during their time in the BYTES program.  The main focus of the elective is to look at items of clothing and see how they can be re-created or re-designed and make it into their own modern interpretation.

On Thursday 30th October, 42 Fashion Culture girls had the pleasure of going into the National Gallery of Victoria to see the world renowned Jean Paul Goutier exhibition. The exhibition houses many of his famous works and the girls were treated to interactives, great visuals, a detailed explanation of his life and some of his most creative and stunning designs.

It was a great trip and one that will help the girls with their own fashion designs and creations.  Thank you to all who attended, especially the supervising teachers Ms Marks and Jamie Binnion.

Business Management excursion

On the 29th of October, two business classes attended an excursion to States School’s Relief to learn, help and donate to the very worth cause. The students attentively listened to an inspiring speech, where we learnt a bit of ‘behind the scenes’ information and action on what the charity aims to do. There we came to the realisation of how fortunate we are and the advantages on offer at McKinnon. This really opened up our eyes and we were so eager to give our aid and cooperation as we strongly believe in this prosperous organisation.

After the introduction, we continued to their warehouse where we were lucky to see the workplace where kids lives and opportunities are dramatically improved. Both classes got physically active and did some volunteer work helping to package, move and store parcels and more. Overall, the whole experience gave us a valuable lesson in both understanding the unique service as well as appreciating what we have got and the beauty of helping others out in our community.  We would like to thank Mr.Fernandez for organising this event and teaching us about being socially responsible.

Year 10 Geography excursion

Year 10 Semester 2 Geography students have been studying river systems at various scales and what better way to learn than to see one of our local creeks in action.  On Tuesday, 110 students embarked on an excursion to Gardiner's Creek in the southeastern suburbs.  We started at the source of the creek in Blackburn, observing and discussing the changes in the environment over time.  We followed the urban creek, which could be considered a concrete drain in parts, all the way to the confluence with the Yarra River in Richmond.

The students saw first hand the various management strategies used to control Melbourne's storm water and how this has impacted the natural environment and our local creek.  They also made links to how their lifestyles can directly influence the quality Melbourne's waterways.

On Monday, the 27th Of October, The Ovenden Band and junior stage band went on a primary school and kindergarten tour. The school's included Caulfield Primary, Ormond Primary and the early childhood centre in Caulfield.

The students enjoyed the day and here is a few sentences on their experience: It was pretty great to get a day off school to play for mini people. They seemed really interested and it was nice to see them all dance and sing along to our music – they were really cute! It was fun visiting our old primary school, the little kids were adorable and their smiles made us happy.  We found it really interesting performing at different schools because each one had a different feel.  Performing the same program a couple of times was a great experience, although it was quite tiring. We also enjoyed going to the park in between concerts. It was a fun day and we hope to have this opportunity again.

As a cross-curricular activity, all year 7 McKinnon students went on an excursion to the Art Gallery of Victoria (NGV) on the 27th of October where they took part in an English and Art workshop.

The English component sees them responding to a variety of artworks with one of the gallery’s education officers. They look at metaphors, similes and haiku’s as a means of creatively responding to art. The students are taken to many areas of the gallery and shown work from various collections ranging from modern contemporary work, to ancient relics and artifacts.

The second half of the day sees students partake in a practical workshop in the gallery’s studio. Here students get the opportunity to practically apply the knowledge they learnt earlier in the day. They do a range of activities such as collage, printmaking, drawing and calligraphy.

Many of the students practical work is on display at the annual art show for parents to see the work they have been doing on their excursion to the gallery.

On Wednesday 29th October the Year 11 Theatre studies class presented a performance in the Allan Lawrence Lecture Theatre.

The year 11 theatre studies class presented an entirely self-devised piece of Physical Theatre titled Obsession.
Physical theatre utilises the body as the instrument to communicate the themes and ideas in the performance, it relies very little on text and a narrative structure. Therefore it can seem quite abstract and unusual and indeed exciting. These talented students have certainly embraced the style and the challenge of creating their own work.

Year 8 Camp

The year level was abuzz with excitement as we boarded the buses. Year 8 Camp was about to begin: another opportunity for fun to be had, and for friendships to be furthered. On a sunny, breezy day, 6 coaches packed with noisy school children made their ways to Rawson Village.  On our arrival, the teachers sat us down, and explained to us how things worked at the camp. We bustled into our cabins, gobbled down our packed lunches, and quickly got organized for our first set of activities. Some of us tried our skill on the commando course, and teamwork initiatives, while others started on a peaceful walk, or an intense session of canoeing. Others may have preferred staying in the skies with the rock climbing, high ropes, and flying fox, or some of the other activities prepared for us, such as archery, mountain biking, or a good game of volleyball. There was plenty to do.

As the sun sank to the horizon on our first day, all 330 of our stomachs rumbled in a chorus of relief as we lined up at the dining hall. It took a while, but we eventually all sat down to a filling meal of pasta. Although we were hungry, our eagerness for the disco triumphed, as we returned to our cabins and prepared our various scary, spooky, and downright horrific costumes, for the Halloween Disco. Everyone looked terrific as we entered the Recreation Room. All the teachers had prepared a great evening, and it was sure to be exciting. With our own student-DJ, Michael Koletsas filling the music with beat drops, the party was a great rave. But the peak of enjoyment was still to come. As we wandered to our beds, munching on a biscuit or two, we realized how close to the end of the Survivor program we were. The Amazing Race was to start on the next day.

Before continuing on with our activities, and driving to Walhalla, we woke at a somewhat unreasonable 6:30, for a hearty 7 o’clock brekky. Day two was our last day of activities, but we were more pumped for The Amazing Race.  The Amazing Race, was set in the historic mining town of Walhalla, each Survivor Island Group was given a booklet of questions, and challenges, which were to be completed within two hours.  With each individual trying as hard as they could for their respective teams, we just wanted to know the results of the Amazing Race, and which form would take out the coveted Survivor Shield.  After another great dinner, we had 3 options – a sporty table tennis tournament, a competitive trivia night or a movie so we could just relax. As our final activity for the camp, each option was thoroughly enjoyable. Half asleep, for the last time, we trudged back to our cabins for our well deserved beauty sleep.

After another early-morning wake-up, we packed up our belongings and braced ourselves for the final announcements of the Survivor program. It was nail biting. After a quick recap of the year, the leaderboards were, ever so slowly, revealed.  Overall, each form had gone well, with the best island award going to Jamaica from 8D. But the much awaited form group results were shown – the top 3 places were out of 8G, 8H, and 8I. By an amazing 1 point, 8H took the win (for the third year in a row!). The top form for Survivor 2014 was amazed, proud, and even bewildered. Their sense of competition and teamwork helped them to win.  Tired, but thankful for the great few days we boarded the buses for our ride home and reminisced about the events of the Year 8 camp, 2014.

The Semester 2 Year 10 Drama Night was on Wednesday Novemeber 6th. in the Alan Lawrence Lecture Theatre. The night was well attended by supportive family, friends and staff members.
The year 10 class had faced the challenge of choosing their own scripts to interpret, two pieces were written by the students and were written beautifully exploring challenging themes and ideas.
Each group also had to direct the piece, costume themselves, design their sets and also create lighting plots.  The class rose to the challenge and were able to complete all areas of the task successfully.
There were 7 pieces in total and offered a range of styles, from the humorous to the serious, from the light-hearted pieces to the dark and deep ones. There was something on offer for everyone and the audience were thoroughly entertained and mesmerized overall.
All class members gave truly inspired performances and should be congratulated on their successes.

Arts show

A lovely warm night was forecast for Thursday 6th November, much to the relief of the Arts staff. With 146 students receiving Arts awards in the Art/Tech courtyard, and hundreds of  family and well wishers, rain is always a frightening thought! But the balmy night this year, was perfect.

The sounds of Moran Zhou’s saxophone set a cheery, upbeat mood.  There was a slightly frantic bustle at the Slip Club table, where people were snapping up a bargain of student made and decorated slip cast bowls and plates, which were a fundraiser for our Spanish sister school in Cuenca. The seven art rooms were filled with people, young and old, marveling at and enjoying the talents of our students.

In the official ceremony, Luisa Marollo and Lambrini Niaros, thanked our sponsors and introduced Ms Rosemary Etherton, an Education Officer from The National Gallery of Victoria, who spoke very favourably of the standard of our student’s artworks and officially opened the Arts Show.

Lewis Timber in Jasper Rd, McKinnon, were once again the main sponsor of the Arts Show, funding the monetary prizes for the VCE students, and the bulk of the awards for the Year 7-10s. I would like to publicly again acknowledge and thank this very generous financial contribution and support from Lewis Timber. If you need any wood, for renovating or building, we highly recommend Lewis Timber in Jasper Rd. Support the people who support our school!

I would also like to thank Buxton Real Estate for their board advertising the Arts Show. Thank you also to Zart Art in Box Hill North, Jim Bonikos from Campion, Colour Products in Moorabbin, The Pug Mill, Northcote Pottery and Spotlight.

And the biggest thank you has to go to the extremely hard working Arts staff, Mrs Browning, Mrs Cowland, Ms Doctor, Ms Levy, Mr Perry, Mrs Pryor, Mr Quinn, Ms Rodin and Mrs Turner, without whom an Arts Show on such a huge scale would not be possible.

Looking forward to another great Arts Show in 2015.

Arts KLA Manager

On Thursday the 13th of November, months of hard work and preparation paid off as the spectacular Year 10 Music night occurred. The evening was filled with beautiful and fun filled music pieces that we, the year 10 music students, had been working on since the beginning of term. Nervous energy filled the air before the show commenced, but as soon as we started performing, it all went away. We all worked tremendously hard to produce the best pieces we could, and each and everyone of us is extremely happy with what we were able to present on the stage. We were incredibly thankful for the great audience that came and was able to make our experience more beneficial, and overall we are very proud of our efforts for our first music night.

Medieval Day is an important part of the History curriculum at McKinnon Secondary College.

After studying Medieval History for a semester, students take part in this program that involves learning about and participating in activities about aspects of Medieval life such as song and dance, weapons and armour, entertainment and games, fashion and knighthood.

Students then showcase a class performance, create a coat of arms to represent their form, and dress up in Medieval fancy dress in a competition to win the Medieval Day Cup. The students feast on hot chickens and lots of share plates and head out to lunchtime with serious food comas. The afternoon is spent watching a medieval movie in the theatre and reflecting on the semester that was.

On Tuesday the 2nd of December, 16 excited and enthusiastic performance students from the Semester 2, Year 9 Music Performance Class, made their way to Claremont Terrace to perform for some local residents. On arrival, the pleased and smiley faces of their audience warmly greeted them. After setting up their equipment, the afternoon began with a whole class performance of the ‘Star Wars Main Theme’. This was followed by small group performances assembled and arranged by the students themselves.

The afternoon concluded with a meet and greet session, where the students introduced themselves to the audience and heard stories of the audience’s own music background. The concert was enjoyed by all who attended.

I would like to thank Ms. Papworth for her attendance and I would like to thank the Year 9 Music Class for their wonderful performances.

On Monday December 1st and Wednesday December 3rd the Year 7 Girls Cricket team competed in two separate state finals, having won through in both Cricket, from term 1, and Super 8s in term 4. The girls progressed through all previous rounds undefeated after comfortably defeating arch rivals Avila College 111 to 80 in the Southern Metro Region Final.

The state final of the Super 8s was played on the hallowed turf of the MCG. This was a fantastic experience for all of the girls, especially Jess Ponsford whose great-grandfather has both a statue and grandstand honouring him at the ground.

Unfortunately the girls had to settle with runners-up after being defeated in the final by Clonard College 121 to 90. The leading run scorers for McKinnon in the final were Lilly Felder and Katrina Gill, whilst Paris Hooper-Duffy and Lucy Van Amrooy were the pick of the bowlers.

Congratulations to all of the girls who competed on the two days.
