On a scorching, windy 38 degree Monday morning, seven keen tennis players (along with James Johnson completing work experience) headed out to Bentleigh Recreation to play the matches of their lives against Parkdale. Their talent shone bright and clear for all to see as they battled their way into numerous victories of 6-0. The girls demonstrated exceptional sportsmanship throughout the day, each withholding the morals and virtues of a pro tennis player!

A huge thank you to Mrs Hooper and Mr Krause (photographer) and James Johnson (talented court bagging / watering).

However, in the words of Rafael Nadal “If you don't lose, you cannot enjoy victories".

The McKinnon A Girls Tennis team will move on to compete with the one and only MacRobertson Girls High on Friday 28 April in the SMR Finals.

Congratulations again to the awesome seven - Jessica ZivinKathy LeeMia LopezEmily RiordanAnita ZhaoLucia Roohizadegan & Keeley Dang who are proud winners of the Kingston Pennant.

Year 9 Urban Project (9UP)

BYTES is compulsory subject for Year 9 students that focuses on developing skills that may not be taught explicitly in other subjects. BYTES builds skills in communication, team management, planning, creativity and digital literacy. These skills will be the key to their achievement in later studies as well as the bedrock of students’ employability in our fast changing job market.

In BYTES, students undertake three compulsory modules (9UP, Sex, Drugs & Rock n Roll and Community) and two electives.

The year begins with 9UP (Year 9 Urban Project). 9UP is regularly identified by students as a highlight to their year. This sees students undertake an intensive group research project on a key societal issue of their choice. Some topics this year include: “increased automation in the workplace”, “the gender pay gap”, “graffiti vs street art”, “euthanasia” and “the impact of domestic violence on the community”.

Year 9 students spent three days in the city in late February and early March gathering data on Melbournians attitudes to their topic. Most groups have surveyed over 300 members of the public and interviewed experts in their field - giving them a great source of data.

They are currently working feverishly in their groups undertaking secondary research, collating and analysing their data to find trends and differences in attitudes between gender, age, education of respondents and other key factors. They are also working in their teams to assign roles and report to their group on their progress in building presentations, creating graphs to visualise their findings and drawing links between their research and other sources they have found. This process is developing analysis, creative problem solving, communication and team management skills - invaluable skills in senior school and in later life.

Students will present their findings in groups in formal presentations to staff, parents, families and their peers on Monday 27 or Tuesday 28 March from 7pm in the Hall, Music Auditorium, the MERC or the Library. All parents, families and staff are invited to attend to appreciate the level of effort and analysis students have put in over the term.

SSV State Swimming and Diving Championships

Twenty students were successful in qualifying for the SSV State Swimming and Diving Championships. A fantastic achievement and the most students McKinnon has ever had at this event.

Will Sharp had an exceptional day, winning five Gold medals and a Silver medal in the Relay. Will won the 200m Individual Medley, 200m freestyle, 50m butterfly, 100m freestyle and 50m backstroke. In the 50m backstroke, Will also set a new state record of 29.35 seconds.

The Relay was an exciting race. McKinnon, represented by Will Sharp, Daniel Gershenzon, Kun Liu and Michael Gershenzon set out fast and had the lead all the way, before being pipped out by 0.10 seconds.

Maya Hammam also had a very successful day winning two Silver (50m butterfly and 50m freestyle) and a Bronze in the 50m backstroke. An excellent achievement after swimming at the Australian Swimming Championships the week before.

The final Relays were for our 12-14 year old Boys teams. The Medley Relay represented by Jarek Soen, Aaron Khominsky, Michael Gershenzon and Kun Liu won a Silver medal. Jarek and Aaron then backed up with Hugo Murray and Ben Maxwell to win another Silver medal in the freestyle relay. Outstanding results!

The diving took place on Thursday 27 April. Students that performed exceptionally well were:

- Grace Mackay: Finished 2nd in the SMR Final and won a Silver medal in the State Final.
- Kizzie Stirling won the SMR Championship and finished 6th in the State Final.
- Alex Ivanov finished 3rd in the SMR Final and 6th in the State Final.

Well done to all students who excelled and showcased the wonderful talent McKinnon has.

Grok Web Competition

Congratulations to the students who completed the Grok Web Competition that ran in March. It was great to see some of our new Year 7s rising to the challenge and doing particularly well. Here is what they had to say:

Shirley Munro
IT Teacher

My name is Steph Georgantas from 7K and I recently completed the Grok Web Competition. I thoroughly enjoyed this competition. I learnt how to create websites using html and CSS and I didn’t have any prior experience. I highly recommend you giving it a go – you will be pleasantly surprised.
Stephanie Georgantas (Year 7)

The Web Comp was a great experience. It was fun to code and in the end I got to make a website. It is a course on how to create a website and I would recommend it not only to programmers but also to students who love designing or anyone who wants to have fun. I really enjoyed the challenge and I would like to take part in the Grok Learning Web Comp next year as well.
Maya Ben Harim  (Year 7)

I actually started the Grok Web Competition late as I had thought it was only for people who knew how to code already. Then I saw the McKinnon News and read that it also taught beginners how to code, so I emailed Mrs Munro, who organised it and we figured things out. It was an amazing experience as the tasks were tough, but it was this which made it all the more satisfying to finally complete that task. I have learned a lot and I would recommend this to anyone who either wants to learn to code, can already code but wants to possibly broaden their skills or for anyone a bit curious.

Vocal Night

On Thursday 27 April, the first Vocal Night of the year was held. The night kicked off with a great performance from the Choir, who sang 'Alle, Alle, Alle', a Jamaican folk song, and 'The Edge of Glory' by Lady Gaga, with solo sung by Kate Collier. Our MC’s Gabby Etlis and Rony Olesh introduced the array of solos performed by the many talented vocal students. The styles performed ranged from musical theatre to jazz to golden oldies, and even an originally written and composed song (written by Chloe James herself), leaving the audience entranced by the skills the students had showcased.

Just before interval, four Year 9 Girls (Phoebe Lock, Caroline Monroe, Talia Raman and Clare Wever) did an amazing rendition of 'Someone In The Crowd' from La La Land with fabulous choreography by Phoebe. During the interval, the ANTIPODEANS team, led by Ebony Lockton, provided refreshments for the audience and participants. The second half consisted of our Year 11 and 12 Music Student performances, which continued to maintain the high standard. The night closed with a very professional performance from the Senior Singers, who sang 'Over the Rainbow' by Harold Arlen, with solos by Clare Wever and Caroline Monroe, and the rousing 'Amazing Grace' with solo by Chloe James. Yet again, the lighting and sound crew led by Nick Xanthoudakis did a brilliant job, and the stage manager, Mrs Ford kept us on our toes. And of course, the night would not have been possible without the efforts of Ms Papworth and Ms West, to whom all the participants were extremely grateful.

Model UN Conference

On Thursday 27 April McKinnon hosted the Model UN where a number of schools attended McKinnon to debate the topic of Zero Hunger: Ending Global Poverty and Addressing Universal Food Security.  Students worked in small groups and in total 31 countries from seven local schools were represented from Australia to Yemen. Students had to give a short position statement in the morning and then participated in General Caucus where delegates debated the Draft Resolution and its clauses, expressing their countries views and seeking the views of other countries. After a wonderful lunch, students then moved onto amendments, where amendments to the proposed resolution were debated on. Finally the students then voted on the final resolution which was accepted.

It was a wonderful day with students working well in teams, discussing and debating issues that are real and relevant to the future world which they will inherit from our generation. Rest assured I believe it is in great hands. Special thanks to all who helped on the day particularly the facilities team, Frau Fowler for her pre-organisation, Mr Cukierman for his assistance on the day and the lovely canteen staff for the wonderful lunch.

Thanks

Congratulations to the large number of string students who attended the String Night on Thursday 4 May in the Alan Lawrence Lecture Theatre to a highly appreciative audience.

The night concluded with an appropriately themed Star Wars piece for May the 4th, after a large number of small groups and soloists performed throughout the evening. Thank you to all including Mr Cook, Ms Kavanagh and Ms Bugeja for their organisation of the evening and the drive they provide for the string students at McKinnon.

The Year 7 Girls Tennis team were pumped up and ready to play against Mentone in the first round. All their effort paid off as they won 5-1 in sets. In the second round the team had a bye which meant that we were automatically set to play against Dandenong in the third round.

This guaranteed them a spot in the Finals against Dromana. It was a tough match but the girls pulled through and won the Southern Metropolitan Region 5-1!

The girls were thrilled and are looking forward to competing in the State Finals in November.

Congratulations to Lisa Liu and Surina Chakravorty who went through the day underfeated.

Other team members were: Joanna Lee, Georgia Foran, Bianca Pecer and Emily Danckert.

Big Data Challenge

The Big Data Challenge was a wonderful opportunity provided to us by the Accounting Faculty at the school. A group of ten Year 12 students, including myself, went to Monash University for the day to conduct a research activity on one of three business-related topics that we could choose from (Business Analytics, Actuarial Science and Econometrics). We were put into groups of 3-5 students from other schools in order to complete the task and we then presented our findings to a class of other students.

While being provided free food for the day, this experience gave us the opportunity to meet new people, make friends and learn about things like data analysis and how climate change might affect our Australian businesses.

Overall, the day was fantastic and taught us a lot. The winning team on the day won themselves a Monash hoodie each (Ben Gonsalvez was on one of the winning teams).

Definitely an opportunity that any Accounting student that is studying a Maths subject, should take, if the chance arises in future years. Thank you to Mr Noble for driving us to the university and to Ms McKinlay for providing us with this chance and for supporting us on the day.

Quotes from Students -

Hayden Aizicowitz: 'Very informative and hands-on.'

Yishai Elaluf: 'An amazing learning curve and gave me a huge insight into university life.'

Liam De La Harpe: 'Participating in the Big Data Day was an amazing experience and I met a lot of people.'

Ben Gonsalvez: 'Hard, long and interesting'.

On Thursday 4 May, both Year 11 Studio Arts classes went to the NGV to learn about a variety of different artist’s use of materials and techniques through a floor talk with an Art educator, who showed and discussed a broad range of artworks, media and art styles.

We also attended a very informative talk on the current Van Gogh exhibition. After lunch in the beautiful sculpture garden, we viewed the stunning Van Gogh exhibition, as well as a very interesting installation by Australian artist Fiona Hall.

Congratulations to Lucia Roohizadegan of Year 11 for her involvement in the 'Vinnies College Conference Day' in The Abbotsford Convent earlier this month. Lucia said that it was “a thrilling experience.”

As the winner for the award last year, Lucia delivered a speech explaining her inspiration behind her winning artwork. She also explained what advocacy means to her and what message she has for other students her age.

Her mum took a few photographs and captured a few snippets of her talk.

On May 17th, McKinnon’s more experienced musicians gathered in the hall to present the first of our ensemble concerts for 2017. It was a very busy night for many individual student performers as well as being an enjoyable and entertaining evening for an enthusiastic audience. The varied and full program included performances from many of the school’s senior performing ensembles.

Opening the concert was the Ovenden Band splendidly conducted by Tracy Videon. Other large ensembles to perform were the Orchestra, also conducted by Tracy Videon and the Symphonic Wind Band conducted by Su Rogerson. The evening also featured several chamber ensembles; Clarinet Choir, conducted by Jamie Morrisey; Saxophone Quartet directed by Martin West, the String Quartet directed by Clare Bugeja and the Senior Singers, directed by Blanka West. The Senior Stage Band and the direction of Dmitry Serebrianik presented a dynamic set to close the evening.

It was a wonderfully musical night celebrating some multi-talented performers and some excellent ensemble playing.

On Saturday 20 May, McKinnon’s elite Cross-Country runners competed in the All-Schools Road Relay Championships at Albert Park Reserve.

The All-schools competition involves students from all private schools around Victoria and therefore the standard of runners is extremely high.

It is the first time McKinnon has entered teams in this competition and we left with our heads held high after a great experience racing against the state’s best runners.

Our Under 14 Boys team of Finn PaynterMatt DayJai Curran-Nicholls and Seamus O’Brien were our most successful team on the day, coming in 5th place behind the winning team from Haileybury College in the 4 x 2km event. The outstanding result saw the boys defeat teams from exclusive private schools including Wesley, Marcelin, Carey, Trinity, Brighton Grammar, St Kevins and Xavier.

We also had our Under 18 Boys team of Sam KristensenHarry MouzakisJason Clayton and Michael Koletsas come 9th in the 4 x 3km event. Jason with an outstanding time of 9:30 mins for the 3km track.

Our Senior Boys team of Skyler and Josh KahBraydon Ross and Will Ockenden came 10th in the Under 20 4 x 3km event. Will with an outstanding time of 9:17 mins for the 3km track.

Well done to our other 5 teams on the day, the Under 16 Boys (12th place), the Under 14 and Under 16 Girls (both 14th place), the Under 18 Girls (19th place) and the Under 20 Girls (21st place).

So our journey continued... We were down to the last eight in the state and pretty excited.

We travelled to Boroondara to play our State Tennis Finals on Monday 22 May. Starting off in Pool B, we began slowly, winning only a few games to Box Hill Secondary College (who incidentally made the State Final!).

In Round 2, now warmed up, we played FCJC from Benalla. We won convincingly 4-2 to qualify for the State Semi Finals.

It now meant that we were in the Top 4 SSV Senior Girls Tennis teams in Victoria!

We met our match against Maribynong Secondary College who proved too strong.  We were absolutely thrilled with coming 3rd in the State.

Thanks Mrs Hooper for your coaching and support throughout our campaign and Mr Krause for his awesome photos.
