Run for the Kids

On Sunday 9 April members of the McKinnon Secondary College staff, parent and student community took part in the Run For The Kids. The proceeds of the event go towards the Good Friday Appeal for The Royal Children’s Hospital.

With thunder and lightning serving as the perfect alarm clock at 6am on a Sunday morning in the middle of the holidays, conditions certainly weren’t ideal for the 5km or 15km event that went through the Domain Tunnel and out of the Bolte Bridge before finishing up in the Botanical Gardens.

The idea to enter a team from McKinnon sprang from Breakfast Club which is a fitness club that runs every Tuesday morning throughout year.

Thanks again to participants from the McKinnon community who made up the McKinnon Run team.

Today I completed the Royal Children's Hospital Run4kids 14.7km run and it was awesome. It was great how I could contribute to charity and participate in something that I really enjoy. I even set a new PB at 82 minutes. It was a great experience.
P.S. I also met Steve Moneghetti.

Thanks

LANGUAGE PERFECT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2017: MONDAY 15 - THURSDAY, 25 MAY
The Language Perfect program has been part of the McKinnon Languages program for more than three years and allows students to learn vocabulary and grammar in an enjoyable way. Teachers are also able to set tasks at school, for homework or assessment. The program measures the individual student learning throughout the year and gives the teachers feedback about the completion of tasks and success rates.

And every year the Language Perfect World Championship challenges schools from around the world to learn languages. Last year McKinnon Secondary College won this competition. This year the competition has 1448 participating schools and organisations in 27 countries.

During the ten days of this championship, all McKinnon students and staff have been enrolled in this competition and get involved in language learning. Many who do not learn a language in the classroom have taken on the offer of 19 languages.

Competition is tough and our students have demonstrated once again that they are always up for a challenge. Our students have completed more than two million questions on Language Perfect. I would like to congratulate especially our Year 7 students who have filled several classrooms and the foyer during lunch times to keep us in the top ranks.

Congratulations to all participants on their excellent effort in language learning!

French Film Festival

The French Film Festival is currently running in Melbourne and the two Year 10 French classes made the most of the opportunity by attending a student screening of "Un sac de billes" on Friday 17 March at the Como Cinema in South Yarra.

The film is set in France during the Second World War and follows the experiences of a Jewish family living in Paris. Two brothers are forced to leave Paris and their family to find protection in the south of France. It is based on an autobiography written by Joseph Joffo.

Our students, along with students from several other schools, were quite moved by the story and were very glad to have seen the film. As the two brothers spend some time in Nice, it was particularly interesting to see some of the sites that many of these students will visit themselves when they travel to France at the end of the year.

Thank you to Mme Antal for organising the excursion and to Ms Dickson for accompanying the group. Thanks also to the students whose behaviour was impeccable.

German Exchange

New friends, new foods, new words, no school uniform, no shortage of chocolate! Just the start of a list of experiences and learnings had by our group of students on the return leg of the German Exchange in March and April. The students returned to McKinnon at the end of April after teary and emotional scenes at the departure bus in Kirchhain, bearing witness to the impact that this family-based experience had on our students.

Students had learned a lot beyond their improvement in German-language skills: students got to know a different kind of school set-up, made presentations about Australia in classes, took part in excursions to the Rhine Valley and other nearby towns and landscapes, ate significant amounts of Döner (which they found to be a lot more deliciously put together than any kebab in Melbourne), had first-hand experience of mouth-watering cakes and sweets, enjoyed a folk-dancing lesson with their German partners, and above all were impressed by the kindness and generosity of their host families.

The Languages faculty hopes that many long-term friendships have been established. – David Nutting

On Tuesday the 13th of June, 14 French students arrived at Melbourne airport and greeted by their exchange partners and host families. They will be spending four weeks in Australia as part of the family, leaving on Monday the 10th of July

They have been going to school, dressed beautifully in a McKinnon uniform. They attend classes with their exchange partners and are also attending French classes so that other students can get to know them and ask questions. Some very generous teachers have given up their time to run special lessons just for the French kids. We'd like to thank the following teachers who have been involved: Mr Strehlau, Mr Farthing and Liam (Australian sports), Mr Hughes (Australian history), Mr Machin and Mr Cukierman (Australian politics), Mrs Wilken (Australian cooking), Ms Papworth (Australian music), Ms Sweeney (Australian animals), Ms Melios (Indigenous Cultures), Ms Roden and Ms Karpathiou (Australian art) and Ms Bourke (Australian Geography).

The French students have also been taken on three excursions. The first was to Point Nepean where they walked along the coastline taking in the picturesque views. Next, they went into the city, walking along Hosier Lane. We went to the State Library and saw some painting, photographs and items that reflect Victoria past and present. The students even sat down to a quiet game of chess in the Reading Room. Finally, they drove into the Dandenongs for a ride on Puffing Billy. Braving the cold, they also fed the sulphur crested cockatoos in Emerald.

The host families have been very generous with their time and energy, showing them the sights of McKinnon, Melbourne and Victoria. Some have even travelled to Sydney.

The exchange program has started very positively and all involved are making the most of the experience. Thank you to the host families, the teachers and the school community for making them feel welcome and for ensuring this program is a success.

The students involved are:

German Model UN Conference 2017

On Friday 23 June, four Year 12 German students slipped into the role of Australian diplomats to discuss the topic "Combating Climate Change: Committing to Global Action".

After registration, the conference was opened by representatives of UNAA Victoria, the Department of Education and the Association of German Teachers Victoria. After a short German video on world-wide climate change issues, Josef Berger, a German teacher, explained the Model UN Conference Protocol and opened the General Assembly.

All assembled countries then presented their position papers. Students had to represent the political position of the country and not their personal views which sometimes caused quite a challenge, especially for McKinnon students who had to represent Australia. Thorough research and following the current daily changes in Australian energy policies made the preparation for our students quite interesting to the last minute. The preparation for this event, which was held entirely in German, was only possible with additional commitment of students in lunchtimes, after school meetings and online collaboration.

After a delicious Morning Tea with traditional German delicacies, the morning continued with a moderated and unmoderated Caucus session, where students keenly debated topical current climate issues representing their allocated countries. Students presented and negotiated amendments with the support of delegates from other countries, all conducted in German.

After lunch, students met in a General Assembly Amendment Session, where changes to the resolution were debated. The entire amended resolution was then put to a vote and the final resolution was passed.

After intense listening all day and using their German communication skills in debates, the General Secretary congratulated the students on their achievements on the day and closed the conference at 3:00pm.

Congratulations to Bridget SchwerdtSarah TrittThomas Broadbent and Avinash Thandaoori for their great performance on the day.

Winter Showcase - Glen Eira Youth Orchestra with Senior Stage Band

It was a tranquil Sunday evening at the Glen Eira Town Hall when the McKinnon Senior Stage Band performed at the Glen Eira Winter Showcase as a guest of the Glen Eira Youth Orchestra (GEYO) on the 30th of July.

The showcase featured a vast number of past and present McKinnon students (many having taken up leading roles in the Youth Orchestra and its affiliate bands) — a testament to the fine music program at our college.

As a featured item of the night’s festivities, the band performed an enjoyable five-piece set. A pegged highlight of the night was the band’s soulful rendition of the ballad “Always and Forever” (well-practiced from its previous performance at the Mt. Gambier Generations in Jazz Festival) that featured the amazing talents of our lead alto saxophonist Jessie Park.

It was also very rewarding to see many of the band’s own current and former members flourishing in their own right as musicians continuing to give back to the local community. This included long-time Stage Band bari sax player and talented clarinetist (among other things) Jamie Morrissey, who opened the evening most magnificently as the Orchestra’s featured soloist of von Weber’s “Concertino for Clarinet and Orchestra”.

All in all, the showcase was a wonderful opportunity to connect and reconnect with fellow (ex-)students, celebrate all our achievements (musical and otherwise), and contribute to the local and wider music community.

McKinnon Volley

2017 has been a year of huge success for McKinnon Volley, the volleyball program here at McKinnon, which has offered training and playing opportunities for over 150 students in years seven to twelve.

One of the most exciting additions to the program has been our heightened participation in the Volleyball Victoria State League. Our Junior Girls, Division 2 Women, Division 3 Men and Division 2 Men teams played games every week at the Dandenong State Volleyball Centre and other venues around Victoria, over a fourteen week season. All of our teams saw great improvement because of this professional experience, and deepened their understanding of the game through playing, training and refereeing.

Another highly anticipated event on the volleyball calendar for this year was the Victorian All Schools Cup, which saw the most participation from McKinnon Volley in recent years. The three-day tournament was held at the Dandenong State Volleyball Centre from 28 to 30 July and was attended by eight teams ranging from year seven to open age. All teams received success in their varying divisions, most notably the Division 1 Under 14 Boys, who finished second out of a massive twenty teams in their age group.

The program saw international achievement this year, as ex-student and beloved McKinnon Volley coach Maree Taig departed for the United States on a prestigious scholarship to play college volleyball, following in the footsteps of her brother Darcy Taig, who returned from a similar experience in April this year.

This comprehensive, friendly program has been a wonderful addition to our schooling year of 2017, and wouldn’t exist without our fantastic coaches, who have worked tirelessly to mentor so many students and share their insight and passion on the game. A special thanks to all of these hard working leaders; Fraser Rhind, Hannah Cole, Nadia Elkin, Luke La Greca, Michael Skalova, Darcy Taig, Maree Taig, Ellie Adler, Peter Kay and Alon Greenberg, who wake up early multiple days a week to lend their time to the improvement and experience of our players. And of course, none of the experiences that McKinnon Volley has offered us this past year would exist without the time, effort and devotion that Mr Phillip DeSalvo constantly dedicates to the program. We would like to offer our greatest appreciation to him and all the other wonderful staff mentioned above.

We all look forward to a big and bright future for McKinnon Volley in 2018 and beyond.
