MELINA AYRES: A STAR THAT CONTINUES TO SHINE

Our 2017 McKinnon Athlete of the Year Melina Ayres has capped off a memorable year with a nomination for Football Federation Australia Young Footballer of the Year. January 2018 has proven to be a breakout period for Melina as she began to establish herself in the W League starting lineup for the mighty Melbourne Victory.

Her two stunning goals in January caused a mini Twitter meltdown among football fans, and are the main reasons she has been nominated for this award.

Melina’s two stunning goals made The Sporting Life’s top 15 W-League goals of the year. Her strikes made it to #14 and #5 on this countdown.

Ethics Olympiad

The Ethics Olympiad and Critical and Creative Thinking Senior Student Seminar --  July 25, 2018
A collaborative reflection by students Myles Kelemen, Jack Mills and Leeor Rose
Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
We, the McKinnon “Senior Philosoraptors”,   the three of us plus Nadia, Lisa, Lindy, Liam, Tom,  Sammy and Jedd, excitedly accepted the opportunity to attend the first annual Ethics Olympiad. We prepared for the event with lunch time inquiry on ethical dilemma topics such as ‘Copying Homework’. Is it ever okay to cheat? We anticipated the impending day of ethical philosophizing with other schools at Scotch College eagerly!
On the day of the event, we were greeted by Matthew Wills, the creator and host of the Ethics Olympiad. The morning session began with a talk on Argument and Reason. We looked at bad arguments and tried to find the errors in expression.
We watched a Monty Python video clip to show us what a bad argument sounds like:
So, what do you think? Is weighing as much as a floating duck a reasonable premise for concluding she is a witch? Of course not!
Ms. Rocca reminded us that just because a majority of people believe something, or express something repeatedly, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s true. Certain rules of logic must be applied. Discovering truth is both a challenging and a rigorous process!
In another session, one of our favourite dilemmas explored was based around Utilitarianism, a theory which basically says that one must always act in a way which reduces harm for the majority.  Sounds simple, right? But there’s a problem! What do you think it is? To help us conceptualize other points of view, we engaged in a thought experiment called the Trolley Problem which was first introduced by British moral philosopher, Philippa Foot, in the 1950s:
You have a train that can go between two train tracks. On one train track, there is one builder, and on the other train track, there are five builders. Next to you there is a lever that can help you direct the train to either direction. Would you kill the one builder to save the five? Do you choose to leave the lever, letting the train run its course? But hey! Inaction is action too!  You are still accountable, because you witnessed the situation and made a decision.
Throughout the day, our critical and creative thinking skills were challenged and stretched as we participated in Communities of Inquiry with students from other schools on topics such as: Could a computer run a country? (Artificial intelligence)  And what defines a zombie? (Mind/ Body problem)
We had lunch outside by the river and mingled with students from other schools.
Finally, the day concluded with Ethical Olympiad practice ‘heats’ where we got in teams of five to debate exposure of the Alt-Right movement, discuss the right to privacy for public protesters and decide the rightness or the wrongness of consenting to the wishes of people suffering from Body Integrity Identity Disorder, which is a psychological condition in which the individual actively seeks an elective amputation.
The day was interesting and incredibly rewarding as we learned how to set up logical arguments, respectfully challenge the ideas of others during inquiries and how to communicate our ideas clearly while thinking critical about every day, real world dilemmas.
A special thank you to Ms Rocca for organizing our attendance at the Ethics Olympiad and Critical and Creative Thinking Seminar.

Teacher Note: Thank you to the Principal class, Mr. Jason Jewell, Andrew Krause and other colleagues for supporting our students’ participation in this event. Further information about Philosothons and Ethics Olympiads may be accessed here:

Glen Eira Youth Orchestra

Senior Stage Band - Glen Eira Youth Orchestra 5th August, 2018

Each year the Glen Eira Youth Orchestra and our Senior Stage Band join forces to provide an evening of vast musical experiences. This year, on the 5th of August, this partnership was renewed at the Glen Eira Town Hall.

The Glen Eira Youth Orchestra was founded in 2015 by ex McKinnon students after the successful Orchestra tour of Iceland in 2014, in the aim to help provide students with the continuation of  learning and playing in an orchestra outside of school. Under the baton of Anthony Brookes , the ensemble was born, and since then, they have held many concerts showcasing the musical talent of the young community.

In the Winter Showcase this year, GYO presented the works of celebrated composers such Edvard Grieg (”In the Hall of the Mountain King’’),  Felix Mendelssohn (“The Hebrides”), Jacques Offenbach (“Orphee Aux Enfers”) and Jean Sibelius (“Finlandia”).

The concert also featured former student Misha Machlak’s composition “Fantasia Opus 1 for String Orchestra”, a flute ensemble run by the flute section,  and current year 12 student Gabi Basman, performing one of his VCE Music Performance program pieces, the “Clarinet Concerto No. 1” 2nd mvt, by Carl Maria Von Weber.

The McKinnon Stage Band complemented these classical array with a set of jazz, soul and contemporary music. The Ensemble performed “The Fire Within”, “This is it”, “Red Zone” and “Toccata” featuring, James Hardy on piano ; Additionally, Yael Zamir took an extended solo in “Be Cool”, along with an adventurous guitar rendition from Jonathan Fletcher;

It was another fruitful musical endeavour for the Senior Stage Band, and on behalf of all involved, we’d like to thank Mr Dmitry Serebrianik for his patience and efforts running morning and after-school rehearsals, the Glen Eira Youth Orchestra and their conductor Tony Brookes for their efforts and fantastic performance, and all the parents and music aficionados who supported the two ensembles on the night.

Senior Stage Band Captains,
Jonathan Fletcher, Yael Zamir, Sotirios Poulios with the contribution from Gabi Basman.

A Special Science Week Visit

On Tuesday 14th August, McKinnon Secondary College played host to three former pupils who gave up their time to come back to school to mentor our Year 10 Biology students.

The visitors were Professor Gab Kovacs (Member of the Order of Australia) who graduated from McKinnon in 1965 and was one of the pioneers in the development and success of IVF; Professor Jim Bishop (Order of Australia), who graduated in 1966 and was the founding Executive Director and Chair of the Cancer Research Advisory Committee of the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre; and Dr Lev Kats who graduated in 1996 and is group leader in the Cancer Therapeutics Program at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.

The students were from the Year 10 Biology Elective called 'Cure Me'. This is a new subject at McKinnon SC  and aims to educate students in contemporary cell theory, diseases and genetics.

Gab, Jim and Lev were the perfect mentors for the afternoon.

While the students completed a number of tasks related to cell theory and experimentation, out alumni moved around and engaged with the students, discussing cell structure and abnormalities.  At the end of the afternoon session the students had an opportunity to find out more about the pathways taken by these esteemed scientists. Their journeys have been (and are) rich and fulfilling and were a wonderful example to our students of what can be achieved with determination and passion.

We thank them for their time, their expertise and their generosity of spirit.

Congratulations to Peta Segbedzi (Captain) Arianne Lindsay (Lead) and Leevi Stein who are the 2018 Kingston Division Junior Lawn Bowls Champions!

The Senior competition was also played in fine spirits with both the Semi and Grand Final going down to the wire and needing an extra end. The measuring tape was needed on several occasions. Unfortunately, Brighton proved too consistent and strong with McKinnon finishing Runners Up.

Congratulations to all players for being such great ambassadors for Lawn Bowls and the College.

The Junior team will hope to get an invitation in to the SMR Finals on Monday 26 March.

Cracker Jack!

Mrs Carole Hooper

Report from the Junior Lawn Bowls Champions:

In the scorching, blistering heat, McKinnon Junior team won the Finals being undefeated for the whole day. The Finals were very close with Brighton taking the lead at the beginning, but McKinnon came back strongly to win. We were extremely lucky to have competed against such a fine school like Brighton.

Year 7 Visit Melbourne Zoo

On Friday 26 October, the Year 7s boarded buses and headed to Melbourne Zoo to continue our work on Classification in Science. In small groups, we walked through the Zoo finding information on various animals and taking so many photos that Rand’s storage became full.

Our group particularly enjoyed visiting the butterfly house, a tremendously humid jungle-like room full of butterflies that would land on our hands and Aleks’ head. The reptile house was also a highlight.

We got to see lizards, turtles, crocodiles, and Lucia’s favourite, snakes! At lunch, we returned to the grass area to eat and finish off our work.

We rounded off the day by going to the kiosk to buy some delicious ice-cream and relaxing by the interactive displays. A fun day was had by all.

Year 11 Music Night

On November 1, all the Unit 2 Music students, joined by some of their colleagues from Year 10 Music, came together to perform one of their pieces from their Performance Exam repertoire. These varied from classical recorder pieces, to vocal pieces from musicals, to movie themes on the piano, and many, many more. The common themes throughout the evening, were these incredible musicians’ time spent and dedication to the Music program, their skills across their instruments and their exploration of their respective expressive skills. Everyone played their pieces with heartfelt passion and with impressive accuracy. It was definitely a night to remember.

The level of difficulty of each piece from each student was incredibly high, which showcased the sheer talent every single student has within them. As each piece came to an end, you could see the relief on the performer’s face, and their surprise that they had managed to ace the pieces they had been preparing for the last six months.

I am incredibly proud to be amongst these outstanding musicians, and this night was great preparation for the VCAA examinations ahead of us in Units 3 and 4 Music.

This was certainly one of my favourite nights of the year and I can’t wait to see next year’s!

Arts Show - Opening Night

Our annual Arts Show was held on Thursday 8 November in our new, revamped and beautified Arts courtyard, which is now flanked by the newly completed Senior building.

Our extremely professional master of ceremony was school captain, Sienna Herterich (Year 12), Dr Joanne Sullivan, a professional artist, who studied Industrial Design at RMIT and completed a PhD in multimedia content design, officially opened our Arts Show. She commented very favourably about the standard of our student’s artworks and generally boosted the ego of both Arts students and Arts teachers alike! :)

Mrs Pryor was farewelled after 25 years at our school, with a beautiful speech by two of her students.

Musician Dustin Yu of Year 10, sang beautifully and created a wonderful backdrop to the viewing of the artworks. Along with the seven rooms of outstanding artworks in a vast array of media and styles, this year we even had a live mannequin. Well done Ally Joachim (Year 10) for taking a risk and wearing your stunning creation!

Congratulations to the students who received arts awards. They were chosen by their teacher for their excellence, creativity, hard work and diligence in both their practical work as well as their written work.

I would like to thank the following companies for their ongoing sponsorship:
  • Lewis Timber in Jasper Rd, who have continued to be extremely generous for the past 13 years
  • Buxton Real Estate for their board advertising the Arts Show

Unternehmen Deutsch - Enterprise German

On Friday 9 November 2018, Year 10 German students celebrated their participation in this national project initiated by the GOETHE INSTITUT AUSTRALIEN.

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
This program connected German businesses with students and engaged in learning for a purpose outside the classroom. The students needed to complete three modules, one focusing on learning more about the economic region, one inquiring about a certain company and presenting their findings and the final module required the students to submit a business idea or service after they had visited the company.

The class was working in six groups with Dresden Optics, BMW, Melbourne Design Studio, Henkell Brothers and the Cuckoo restaurant in the Dandenongs. Visits to all businesses were organised and students submitted presentations and/or videos for each module in German (150 - 200 words each).

The final awards ceremony last Friday brought representatives from 16 schools, even from Perth and Sydney, to the Bayview Eden Hotel in Melbourne. Representatives of businesses, the German Business Chamber and the Honorary Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Melbourne, Michael Pearce, were present.

Nina LiuJeffrey Chum (Year 10) and I were invited to participate in a panel discussion with students and teachers to talk about our experience.

It was with great pride, that two of my groups, ´Fowlers große Jungs´ and ´Die Jungunternehmerinnen´, received awards. ´Fowlers große Jungs´ took the second prize (worth $300) behind the Sydney International German School and ´Die Jungunternehmerinnen' were awarded a Special Prize for Design (worth $100).

All participants were challenged in this project and I would like to congratulate students on the effort and creativity they showed.

I would also like to thank Mr Nutting and Mr O'Brien for supporting the project by driving students to companies.

From 2019 this project will be further extended in the Asia Pacific region.

Year 7 Robotics

The Year 7s have been learning about robotics and how to create programs for the Lego Mindstorm EV3. Students worked in pairs to solve a series of challenges to improve problem-solving, critical thinking and collaboration skills. These challenges required students to create programs that instruct their EV3s to perform certain manoeuvers such as to create a shape or complete a full rotation. Here are a few images and videos of 7C and 7M having fun with their robots.

Big thanks to the students in the Year 9 Robotics class that have assembled EV3 for us.

Year 8 Girls Tennis

On Thursday 22 November, the Year 8 Girls (as School Sport Victoria Regional Champions), set off to play in the State Finals against schools from across the state.  We were down to the last eight with our champion team of Joanna LeeGeorgia ForanSurina ChakravortyLisa Liu and Sophie Willis

Initially we had a slow start but we quickly found our rhythm. Against the first school in our pool - Mary MacKillop, Leongatha we had a hard time but then we confidently paved a path that would take us to the Semi-Finals by beating St Joseph’s Horsham and Heathmont. As pool winners we played University High School. It was a nail biting game in the Semi-Finals. We drew so close with them with even sets and even games. This meant we had to play a decider to determine whether we rose or fell. One game all ... two one down ... it was a fierce battle for the match, with determined looks of gladiators our warriors lost yet another game, resulting in puddles of tears on the green (synthetic grass). Now we had lost. There was nothing else to do but shake hands, hang heads and walk away contemplating our defeat. This time we lost and came 3rd in the State but ... “we’ll get ‘em next time for sure ….

Thank you to Mrs Hooper for her support and assistance from when we began in Term 1 through to our State Final in Term 4 and to the Assistant Coach Sam Bajracharya, who gave us great advice at training and at the Finals.

Go McK!

Congratulations to our Year 7 Girls Super 8s cricket team who participated in the SSV State Finals on Tuesday 27 November. On the day the girls participated in three matches against Bairnsdale SC, Springside West SC, and traditional rivals Balwyn HS.

In the City v Country Derby in Round 1, the girls from Bairnsdale were too strong with the bat as they coasted to an easy victory. However, the girls bounced back smashing Springside West SC and Balwyn around the park to finish the day with two wins and 3rd place in the State.

Well done to all the girls in the team, and special credit to our team leaders Casandra Joseph and Aspen Lehmann
