Principal Pitsa Binnion joined Minister for Education James Merlino and Member for Bentleigh Nick Staikos for an on site meeting at our new Virginia Park Campus, on track to open in January 2022.

It is indeed a very impressive building, which will accommodate 1100 students. Member for Bentleigh Nick Staikos said, “McKinnon Secondary College is a great local school and this new campus is yet another great example of the school building boom that is happening right across Victoria.”

The new campus includes a four-storey building with contemporary learning spaces and a gymnasium for students to stay active. It will incorporate modernised learning spaces, shared community facilities and areas for gathering and celebrating the achievements of students.

The campus will be transformative for the area and an incredible asset to McKinnon. It will be a very exciting new chapter!

'Try for 5' Salad Recipe Competition Winner

Last year the Health Learning Area invited students to design a salad lunch that would be suitable to purchase from the school canteen.

It was a huge success so we decided to run a similar competition this year. We named it, ‘Try for 5’. The intention being that five vegetables would be included in it.

It was no easy task to select a winner due to the large number of students who entered. However, a worthy recipient was selected. The winner is Tim Nicolaides of Year 8.
Tim Nicolaides Year 8

Tim’s salad ticked all the boxes and he wrote, “This salad is high in healthy carbs which gives students and teachers energy while learning and teaching. The chickpeas are a great source of protein, especially if you are vegan and vegetarian. All the five vegetables are cheap and always in stock. Plus, the vegetables have the same cooking time so it can all be cooked at once."

Congratulations to Tim who received a voucher for his salad from the canteen and he also received a $50 Visa voucher.

If you are interested in making this healthy salad, here is Tim’s delicious recipe:

TIM'S SALAD

Serves 3 (large)

Ingredients:

● Half a sweet potato (peeled and diced)

● One large potato (diced)

● ⅓ Butternut pumpkin (cut skin and dice)

● 1 cup diced Beetroot

● 2 handfuls baby spinach leaves

● 1 tin of chickpeas

● 60-80 grams feta cheese (crumbed)

Dressing:

● 1 tbsp Olive oil

● Pinch of salt

● 2 tsps dry thyme leaves

Method:

1. Boil the potatoes, sweet potatoes and butternut pumpkin in a large pot for 15 minutes or until tender.

2. Drain the veggies and add them to a large bowl.

3. Add the chickpeas, spinach and feta and mix so the spinach wilts slightly.

4. Add the dressing and mix well.

5. Top with the beetroot.

**Note: Beetroot can be added in Step 3, however it may turn the salad purple. This is a personal preference. You may also prefer to roast the vegetables.

Congratulations to Carole Hooper who has been awarded the School Sports Victoria Award for 20 Years of Service

Each year School Sport Victoria (SSV) recognises several teachers and volunteers who have made an outstanding contribution to school sport in Victoria. I am delighted to congratulate Carole Hooper who has been awarded a 20 Year Service Award for her contribution to SSV over a very significant number of years.  Well done Carole on this wonderful award!

Pitsa Binnion
Principal

For over 20 years Carole has been providing opportunities for students to participate and compete in sporting events through a variety of roles. Her journey began in 1982 at Shepparton South Technical College as Sports Coordinator in the Victorian Secondary Schools' Sports Association, she continued this role at Ballam Park Technical College before moving to McKinnon in 2004 and taking on the role of Junior Sports Coordinator. In 2011 she became the Kingston Division Coordinator.

All of these roles have seen Carole providing opportunities for students to access sporting success from school through to state level. It is a huge achievement and Carole is a worthy recipient of the SSV Service Award for her dedication to providing opportunities for our students. Well done Carole!

Year 7 ICT Lego Mindstorm EV3 Robots

All our wonderful Year 7 classes have been taking part in a great experiential learning exercise. Working with the Lego Mindstorm EV3 robots is very much learning through experience and the students have enjoyed this greatly.

Working in pairs, the students have been learning to write short programs to make their robot move, turn and even follow a shape. They have had to try and test their programs, experiment with different settings and values when it doesn’t work and generally work out for themselves how to complete the many challenges set.

After so much time working apart this year, it has been great to see the students learning together and cooperating with each other, even if the class noise volume has increased significantly!

For students who have particularly enjoyed this experience, they might want to consider taking Robotics in Year 9 where they will learn to construct, test and explore the EV3 robot in much more depth.

Welcome to our Arts Show

Our Arts Show is being held on the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri Tribe and I wish to acknowledge them as Traditional Owners. I would also like to pay my respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging.

I am incredibly proud to share with you the amazing work of our students, who have demonstrated incredible resilience, perseverance, hard work, dedication and creativity. Over the course of this extremely difficult year, our students have made do with materials hurriedly distributed during the last days before lockdown. Many hours were spent during lockdown, researching art styles and ideas, experimenting with media, designing sculptures and experimenting with different compositions, so that artworks were ready to be completed with materials at school, upon our return.

Thank you to the parents, guardians, families and school community for supporting our Arts students. A special thank you to Mr Krause, Mr Eglezos and Ms Hurwitz who were instrumental in putting together our Virtual Arts show. Thank you to the incredibly hard working Arts staff, Ms Angel, Ms Bertsa, Mr Eglezos, Ms Griffith, Mr Perry, Mr Quinn, Ms Rodin, Ms Rogosic and Ms Sip, for their dedication and for working so well as a team. And thank you to our esteemed Principal, Mrs Binnion, for her support.

Cooking for the Homeless - Glen Eira News

A group of Year 10 girls from McKinnon Secondary College have been cooking meals for the homeless since mid-August.

Skyla, Alice, Monique, Madi, Dara and Aniqua
As part of the silver component of the Duke of Edinburgh Award, Dara, Skyla, Alice, Monique, Madi and Aniqua have been cooking more than 50 nutritious meals a fortnight (pictured below) for the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA). The meals are taken to the ADRA café in Narre Warren and delivered directly to those in need.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a youth development program that is designed to equip and empower young people to achieve their personal best and assist their community. In Year 9, the six girls completed the Bronze Award and in an effort to continue to develop their skills and help the community, decided to continue on to the Silver Award. Dara told Glen Eira News that with the effects of COVID rippling through the community, they wanted to do a group project together in order to make a difference.

“We decided we needed a practical way to help those less fortunate, while also following the distance and contact-free restrictions,” she said.

“We knew that we had the resources to provide aid, so through the Duke of Edinburgh program, it was the perfect opportunity to achieve both goals.”

Dara said after discussing multiple issues and looking at organisations they were passionate about, they discovered ADRA.

“Through this project, we are able to work as a group to produce hundreds of meals each month that go to those who are disadvantaged,” she said.

“Cooking for the homeless makes us as individuals appreciate what we have, especially during these tough times.”

McKinnon Senior Girls Cricket round robin results

It was a scorching 34 degrees when McKinnon played a 3 game 10/10 round robin of cricket on February 18th.

The first game was against Bentleigh. The girls struggled to get their groove on early, and were dismissed for 29. Bentleigh managed the runs in only 5 overs.

The girls had 15 minutes to hydrate, talk strategy and gain more confidence heading into the Parkdale match. After losing the toss again and being thrown into bat, the girls managed to score 50 runs in their ten overs. A great partnership between Steph Baker and captain Kampi Nainhabo meant a competitive target. Unfortunately Parkdale managed the runs with a couple of overs spare.

Again, regrouping for the final match of the day, MCK lost the toss and were sent in to bat for the third time! 52 runs were scored by MCK, with a great opening partnership between Georgia Foran and Kampi Nainhabo. Kampi ended with 33 not out, a very good batting effort. Unfortunately, Brighton secured the win with 3 overs left.

Whilst the McKinnon girls didn’t manage a win, they certainly impressed with their positive attitudes and energy.

Zero wins but a great attitude!

Senior boys cricket won the Kingston division round robin last Thursday and today won the SMR Quarter Final against Dandenong High.

Our batting stars Lachie Smith and Ben Porter continue to make scores that have seen us win every match so far in 2021.

Vrushank was the pick of the bowlers in the quarter final with a splendid 3/4 off his 3.1 overs.

Next week we are off to the Southern Metro Region Semi Final against Melbourne High. Good luck boys!

Intermediate Boys Cricket Team impressive at Kingston Division comp

The Intermediate Boys Cricket team travelled to Caulfield Park to play in the annual Kingston Division cricket competition.

Game 1 vs Bentleigh
Bentleigh batted first and smashed up a very competitive 72 off their 8 overs with Krishna Sridhar and Ewan Daly, our only wicket takers.
In reply, we managed to get the runs quite easily in the end with Thivi Salwathura and Lewis Sellenger guiding us home with 45 and 29 retired respectively.

Game 2 vs Mordialloc
We came up against a very strong Mordialloc outfit in our second pool game. After batting first, we managed to post a competitive total of 58. Lewis Sellenger again led the way with 27 and nice little contribution at the end from the hard hitting Sam Enever. In reply, Mordialloc were able to get the runs with a couple of balls to spare.

Game 3 vs Westall
The final pool game against Westall was a comfortable 66 to 28 victory. Josh Smith, Kane Vaughan and Krishna Sridhar were all in the runs and wickets were shared evenly again.

Semi Final vs Parkdale
The semi final against Parkdale eventuated in a very tight finish. McKinnon made 54 after batting first. A timely 18 not out from Sam Enever saved the innings after a rocky start and little contributions from Senin Seymour and Josh Smith helped us to 54. Parkdale replied steadily, however they needed 13 for victory off the last over. Two boundaries made the situation comfortable for them, however needing two to win off two balls, Thivi Salwathura grabbed two wickets to snatch the game for McKinnon.

Final vs Mordialloc
We faced the undefeated Mordialloc in the final and once again batted first. Lewis Sellenger lead the way again with a stylish 39 in our total of 54. Having the field and bowl at our best to claim the pennant for the day, the McKinnon boys were at their best against the very strong Mordialloc outfit. Thivi and Ewan managed to claim a couple of wickets for us and we were on track to defend our score. However with 5 needed off the final ball, gun Mordialloc batsman Harry Di Mattia was able to hit a six and win the match for Mordialloc.

Thanks to all of the boys for their efforts and commitment on the day.

Greg Hoskin (Coach)
