Legal studies guest speaker

Ever wanted to meet the Attorney General, or your local Member of Parliament? Well, fortunately for McKinnon VCE legal studies’ students, the privilege was given to them on Friday 17th of April, when the Victorian Attorney General, the Honourable Martin Pakula and Nick Staikos, the state member for Bentleigh visited our school.

Both men offered their time to the students and teachers to ask questions relating to the legal and political field; allowing Mr Buntman’s memorable and controversial question for Nick Staikos to be addressed.

This opportunity allowed students to enhance their knowledge on the representatives that affect the way our society runs and how it is managed.

We gained understanding of the daily life as Attorney General, ways to get into the legal system and what Mr Staikos plans to put in place for our community. This incursion has benefited legal studies’ students as we can better understand, due to first hand experience of Staikos and Pakula and their knowledge, on the first topic learnt earlier in the year - Parliament as a law-maker.

We thank Ms Arena for organising both Mr Pakula and Mr Staikos to come and speak at McKinnon allowing VCE students to interact with these reputable figures of parliament; it was a great experience!

Rachel Caruana and Jade Saad - year 12 legal studies students.

Year 7 Art/English Excursion

On Friday the 24th of April 7D attended the National Gallery of Victoria to participate in both of the Art and English guided tours as well as an interactive art workshop.

The day began with the Art of English gallery tour. Students had the opportunity to explore and respond to a number of artworks including Picasso's painting The Weeping Woman. It was a wonderful opportunity to be able to see an original Picasso painting in real life.

Our next guided tour was the Art of Play. Students responded to works of art using a lucky dip Mystery Bag. They were given ordinary everyday objects from the Mystery Bag which they then had to relate in some way to a painting of their choice. Students were asked to present their ideas to the rest of the class. This exercise was a lot of fun as it was not always an easy task to find a common link between the objects from the bag and the paintings. There were some very creative responses.

After lunch students participated in a one hour art workshop using coloured paper and plastic jewels to create a collage in response to the fashion designers Romance Was Born. The students thoroughly enjoyed this experience and created some wonderful artworks of their own.

We would like to thank all of the education staff at the National Gallery of Victoria for making our visit to the gallery such a memorable experience.

Senior Jazz Band Tour

On Friday the 1st of May after a healthy breakfast, a cacophony of young jazz enthusiasts boarded Nuline bus with sunnies on, wearing their fluffy Yamaha sponsored band hoodies and claimed the back seat with their milo ice creams in hand. The 8 hour bus ride began with a mellow vibe of smooth and soothing jazz which crescendoed as we got closer and closer to Mt Gambier.

When we arrived at the performance venue we were all overwhelmed by the sound of exuberant stage bands from around Australia that had poured into Mt Gambier for the famous Generations in Jazz Festival. Our ears feasted on the talents of James Morrison and Ross Irwin, Take 6, Idea of North, Hot Horn Happening and other international artists. We were even lucky enough to meet Ross Irwin and take a photo with him.

The next day, feeling rested and refreshed after a good nights sleep, we ventured once more to the emerald South Australian country side for yet another day of inspirational music making. The day began with a concert featuring the astonishingly impressive winners of last years division 1 stage band. This sent the empowered Mckinnon stage band off to play in division 3, where soloists: Moran Zhou, Vitor Fanstone, Alexia Samiotis, Jamie Morrisey and Jack Doherty- Brown were able to strut their stuff.

The third and final day of this adventure proved to be the most rewarding and inspirational part of the trip. After yet another fulfilling night’s rest we had the opportunity to watch masterclasses run by famous jazz musicians from around the world.

To bring this journey to an end, we were lucky enough to watch Take 6 for a final time as well as many inspirational young Jazz musicians. This world class concert left us excited and inspired by the cornucopia of musical ability that we had been exposed to.

Many thanks for Mr Dmitry Serebrianik and Ms Su Rogerson for getting us involved in Generations in Jazz this year. It would not have been the same without you and all your amazing life advice and stories.

Open Night is a premier event in the life of the College.  Each Learning Area showcases its Programs and Staff discuss courses, learning styles, content and associated extra curricular activities.
On May the 5 th the evening commenced with a senior quartet playing in the Assembly Hall Foyer.  Senior School Captains and leaders  welcomed families with a package containing a folio of Transition documents, a program and flyer. Collectively these inform parents of the key values which form the underlying principles of our education platform.

The Information Briefing  was introduced with an outstanding performance by the Senior Stage Band.  College Principal, Mrs Pitsa Binnion officially welcomed families and announced  a $9.5 million dollar grant from the State Government. These funds will enable the school to commence Stage 2 of the current Building Plan.  Our Curriculum Manager, Mr Richard Long and Our Head of Junior School, Mr Les McLeod provided an insight into the broad ranging Curriculum and related opportunities at McKinnon Secondary College.  Mrs Jenny de Kretser spoke to parents about the Application Process.

Mr McLeod invited parents to view the various Faculty displays and demonstrations as they toured the school.  Prospective students saw students undertaking various activities, including  Sport and Physical Education Demonstrations,  a variety of amazing Arts, delicious Food Technology  samples, colourful  Mathematics and dynamic Science experiments,  Musical Presentations and tutorial facilities  and  Humanities displays including History, Geography and Commerce/ Business fields of study.   Students of German and French worked in the Library and also prepared food typical of each Culture’s  cuisine.

Tours of the College during the evening provided an opportunity for our Local Community to meet and share exchanges with Staff and friends.  Children enjoyed seeing the array of facilities, Specialist teaching spaces and for prospective Year 7 students, the Year 7 Centre with its associated staff offices  and discussion spaces.  Parents and children were invited to attend our Tours of the school at work on May 7 and 12.  We hope that families left the College feeling confident about the opportunities provided by State Government education and for our part, at McKinnon Secondary College.

Pooh and more pooh! That was the first word I thought of when I heard we were going to the Werribee Western Treatment Plant. But once you get over the fact that the place is full of stuff you flush down your toilet it really is a very interesting place to visit.

We got to learn all about exactly what happens to waste once it reaches the plant. We learnt what is the difference between sewage and sewerage and that Melbourne, because of the plant is the largest producer of recycled water in Australia.

We  also learnt heaps about ways we can save water like having water tanks and minimize urban surface runoff into our waterways by adding things like rain gardens to our down pipes.

All in all going to the Werribee Western Treatment Plant was a great experience and we learnt loads.

Senior Girls Tennis - State Champions

I wish to congratulate THE BEST SENIOR GIRLS TENNIS TEAM IN VICTORIA for 2015.  Our very own STATE CHAMPIONS: Jess BrzozowskaMichelle PitsSophie RobertsonBailey Sandler and Eren Ozenir.

Their story is one of persistence and resilience paying off. After being State Runners Up for the last five years, the girls were determined that it was their year to take home the State Title.

They became Kingston Champions by beating Parkdale, Sandringham and Bentleigh and became Southern Metropolitan Regional Champions by defeating  MacRobertson Girls High, Nossal and Lyndale Secondary.

On Monday, at Boroondara Tennis Centre, they easily won Pool B by beating Horsham, Myrtleford, Gladstone Park and Mildura in the Semi Finals to advance to the State Final against Box Hill.

The Final was a neck and neck tussle, so much so, that after four singles and two doubles, both teams were equal on sets and games won.  The Final was deemed a draw so an extra set needed to be played.

Jess and Michelle convincingly won this 4-0 to enable McKinnon to take out the elusive State Title.  In fact, Michelle never dropped a single game in her singles match and as a doubles pair Jess and Michelle only dropped three games for the entire day.

The tennis journey this year was a fabulous team effort, with Sophie, Bailey and Jess competing at Divisional Regional and State competitions. All girls did a wonderful job.

Well done girls on your wonderful achievement!

VCE geography camp

The annual Year 12 Geography Camp to Tarra Bulga National Park, a mainstay for a generation of Geographers at McKinnon, was held at the beginning of May, in order for our intrepid group of students to sample the beautiful scenery provided by the cool temperate rainforest of the region. This experience has proved invaluable for students back in the classroom, in preparation for a series of SACs.

We wandered through the Park, surrounded by centuries-old Myrtle Beech and towering Mountain Ash, up ridges and down gullies, harassed by the occasional stray tree branch and endlessly pursued by the sworn enemy of the VCE Geography student, the mighty leech. We were able to observe the unique characteristics of the park and see the management that had been put in place to ensure the conservational and recreational usage of the park could be sustained for future use, as well as putting a creative and delicious spin on BBQ lunches. At night, our palatial cabin accommodation allowed students the chance to huddle around the campfire, set up impromptu movie theatres and test Monopoly skills.

Unfortunately, the 2015 trip looks like being the final visit due to a new course being introduced for 2016, but we are sure all students past and present have enjoyed their time at the Park.

Thanks to Bourkie, Howie and Stacey for their efforts in staffing the camp!.

Daniel Blackmore.

Vocal Night

On Monday 11 May the first Vocal Night for 2015 was held in the Lecture Theatre. The Choir opened the night with two very impressive pieces; ‘Freedom is Coming’, a South African Traditional freedom song, and the well known hit 'Hold Back the River' by James Bay and Iain Archer – solo sung by Jack Ryan.  Izabel (Eui Jeong) Seo accompanied the pieces, which were performed, to a very high standard.

There were group, trio, duo and solo performances, with some accompaniment on piano and others on guitar.  Everyone showed off their musical talents with songs from pop, musical theatre and even swing and blues.

The World Challenge students catered for the interval with food and drinks and everyone had a great break, returning ready for an amazing second half where VCE students performed pieces for their upcoming exams.

The night concluded with two exceptional pieces from the Senior Singers singing ‘Stars I Shall Find’ and 'Do you Want to Build A Snowman’.  Ms West conducted and gave the audience a treat to amazing four part harmonies.

Thanks to the amazing Audio Visual team and the wonderful Ms West for the organisation of this splendid night.

Year 11 Theatre Night

The Year Eleven Theatre Studies performance this semester was a shortened version of the Greek play, Medea by Euripides. It follows the story of Greek legend Jason (of Jason and the Argonauts) and his wife, Medea. When he marries another woman, she becomes outraged and swears revenge on her husband, his new wife and his new wife’s father.

This semester we were given the option of performing in the style of Greek Theatre or Commedia Dell’Arte (an Italian improvised style of comedy). We picked Greek Theatre and learnt the individual conventions of the piece.

With many students taking on more than acting, the class performed, stage managed, designed costumes and masks, hair and makeup, organised the foyer and advertising as well as directed the piece.
We were privileged to be under the guidance of our amazing and dedicated teacher Ms Carly Doctor.

We would like to thank all the friends and family who came to watch our performance, as well as Nick Xanthoudakis, Adian and Myles, who were our lighting technicians on the night. It has been an amazing experience and we have all grown together as a class as we progress further into our studies.

On Friday the 5th of June, 25 excited and enthusiastic performance students from the Semester 1, Year 9 Music Performance Class, made their way to Claremont Terrace to perform for some local residents.

After setting up their equipment, the afternoon began with a medley of War Time Songs arranged by William Hardy. This delighted the audience, who were more than happy to join in and sing along. Many other solo and group performances were performed to the excited audience. For many students, it was their first solo performance.

The concert was a fantastic display of talent and passion and enjoyed by all who attended.

I would like to thank Ms. Papworth for her attendance and I would like to thank the Year 9 Music Class for their wonderful performances.

Theresa Kirk.

Year 7 History Museum Project

On Friday 5th June, the McKinnon Year 7 Transition (MYST) Centre was transformed into an ‘Ancient Civilisation Museum Exhibit’ as part of the Year 7 History program.  Each class had to investigate in depth an ancient Mediterranean society (Egypt, Greece or Rome), focus their research on a particular feature (art, architecture, government, economy, defence and culture) and reflect on how our contemporary society has been, and continues to be, influenced by these civilisations so many years later.

During this project, students learnt important research skills such as referencing sources, and improved their skills in the synthesis of information gathered in order to present an exhibit that was visual, aural, interactive and engaging.  Many students achieved this by creating videos, podcasts, acting as tour guides and, in some cases, dressing up and becoming the ‘embodiment’ of their specific topic.  Further to this, many students spent a lot of their time recreating historical artefacts based on their research, and this demonstrated not only authentic learning, but a high level of engagement in the activity as well.

Congratulations to all the students in 7B, 7D, 7F, 7H, 7J & 7L on their amazing work, effort and the impressive level of energy and enthusiasm displayed in the completion of this project.

French Exchange Excursion

The 22 French exchange students and their accompanying teacher, Mrs Dorothy Fox, arrived in Sunday the 7th of June and they have begun their McKinnon experience this week. Students spent one day on excursion exploring the Melbourne Museum and admiring the views from the Eureka Skydeck.

Thursday morning was their first day at our school. They wore the McKinnon uniform for the first time with élégance. In France, students don’t wear uniforms at school and they always experience a mix of surprise and excitement the first time they have to wear the uniform.

The day started with a very warm welcome from the principal team. Mrs Binnion greeted the students in French. Students were very touched and immediately felt they are more than just visitors, they are now part of our community. Mrs Fox presented Mrs Binnion with a gift sent by the French principal or proviseur as they are called in France.

After the group photos, students met all the staff involved in the exchange: Frau Fowler, Ms Kellie Dickson and the Year 10 student managers. They received information about the exchange and all the necessary documentation to start classes in period 3. A group of Year 11 and 12 McKinnon students ran the last part of the induction session. Hanna Gutkin, Eren Hagar, Mariel Beiers and Greta Skahill took the French students for a tour of the school.

Overall, it is a fantastic start for the French exchange and we look forward to the many other activities planned.
