The year 9 Drama Night was held on Monday 1st December in the Alan Lawrence Lecture Theatre.
The two classes performed the plays they had work shopped and devised themselves.  Both were sensational and offered a lovely balance of humour and drama.
The night was well attended by family, friends and staff, with not one seat remaining free in the theatre.
The students should be applauded for their efforts and truly memorable performances.

Congratulations to all involved.

On December 9th the new cohort of Year 7 students for 2015 arrived. They spent the day working through a variety of activities, to help them familiarise themselves with the lay-out of the school, the classrooms they will be in next year, and the key staff who will be looking after them. They also met with their Peer Support leaders, who will be in Year 11 next year. This dedicated group of senior students recently underwent special training to assist them with the challenges that leading their groups of Year 7 students will bring.

The day centred around helping the new students of the school to settle in, so that the first day of the new year should not feel so daunting for them. It was a chance to make new friends, and to see what a typical day in the life of McKinnon Secondary College is like.

The annual international student welcome back lunch was held on Thursday 5th February. The lunch provides an opportunity for the college to welcome returning students and the 23 new students who have joined us this year. As almost all students had been overseas, back home, over the holiday it was a great chance for students to catch up socially and for new students to meet other international students facing the same situation as themselves.

Mrs Binnion addressed the students and warmly welcomed them to the college and set out some expectations for the year ahead. Students also got to meet a large number of staff, including Student Managers, Associate Principals, EAL teachers and various other college personnel.

Lunch this year was Japanese Bento Box catered for by Shyun in Carnegie.
Students are looking forward to a successful year of study at McKinnon and the opportunity to enjoy our wonderful city.

On Monday 2nd of December the Year 12 Class of 2015 headed off to Phillip Island Adventure Camp for the Year 12 Study Camp.
The camp has a series of activities across the jam-packed 3 days. Guest speakers, including author Archie Fusillo, and motivational sports psychologist Mark Dobson inspired us all with their words of wisdom, a day of physical challenges was presented on day 2 as groups of students completed activities including High Ropes courses, Flying Foxes and the crazy Giant Swing.

The students were all fantastic on the camp with Mrs Binnion labelling it "The best ever!" It really was a great start to a very exciting year for our most senior students at McKinnon SC.

Our Principal Mrs Pitsa Binnion, as well as the Student Managers, Mr Benjamin Rood and Mrs Karen Sargent spoke to the parents about how the new cohort of students were going.
Many questions from the parents were addressed as well. The parents seemed to appreciate the chance to meet with some of the key staff, as well as each other.

Senior Boys and Girls Cricket

Senior Boys Cricket
"Fortunate indeed this field;
It’s destiny is not to yield
A harvest made with wheat and corn
From rutting plough or harrow born,
But cleared of lump & stump & thicket
Is set aside for playing cricket."

On Thursday 12th February, King George Reserve was set aside for this wonderful pastime, playing cricket.
The Senior Boys cricket team gathered at the hallowed turf, where a history of McKinnon legends had strutted their stuff.
The scorebook, told a story of old McKinnon stalwarts, with names like McCooke, Halliday and Schwarz littered throughout.

This year it just wasnt meant to be. After belting 82 off 8 overs in the first match against Parkdale, we went out in the field with our tails up but unfortunately some heavy hitting from the Parkdalians handed them the victory, and later in the day the championship as they edged past us overall on percentage.

Well done to all the boys who played on the day.

Mr.Hudd

Senior Girls Cricket,

Last Thursday, 15 of the finest senior girls cricketers McKinnon has to offer played a unique 10/10 style game of cricket at McKinnon Reserve. Batting first, Pitsy started strong and after a full innings, the girls had reached 167 runs. Bowling highlight has to go to Cassie Semple's 3/0. Yes a 3 wicket maiden over which catapulted the McKinnon girls to a comfortable 70 run victory. Here's hoping the ladies can keep up the good work in the next division!

Cheers
Kate Jobson

Swimming Carnival

It was a cloudy forecast for the 2015 edition of the Mckinnon Secondary College Swimming Carnival. Much more than just a swimming competition, this event is a real feast of physical activities. Water polo, Beach volleyball, Diving and new in 2015 was an outdoor table tennis competition.

All students immersed themselves in the activities in the attempt to gain house points. In the fashion stakes, Chisholm raced away to a great start winning the best dressed house. The theme this year was Superheroes and Villains. Safe to say the students and staff all put in super efforts with their costumes.

The swimming events were hotly contested early, and it was Gilmore doing the damage in the pool. Monash tried hard all day with some super talented swimmers and impressive wins in the Beach Volleyball. Flynn had some success in the Water Polo late in the day, but it was a bit late.

The only other highlight of the day was the MANKINNON dance off. Male staff members at Mckinnon are selectively chosen for a big dance off, and they did not disappoint again this year, wooing the crowd with a superbly choregraphed dance to UPTOWN FUNK. But it wasn't to be. Again, the Year 12 class of 2015 stepped up to the challenge and reclaimed the title. Could this be the end of mankinnon?

A massive thankyou to all the staff who assisted on the day, below is a list of results:

WE NEED TO TRY AND RAISE $100,000 IN THE NEXT 6 WEEKS
Follow the links at the bottom of the page to donate.

Christina Lagogiannis is a Year 7 student of our school and is battling with Osteo Sarcoma, a rare form of cancer which was detected in her femur bone.

Christina was diagnosed in January 2014. She promptly began Chemotherapy, at Monash Clayton Hospital, she then had a full knee and femur replacement at Melbourne Royal Children’s Hospital, then underwent further chemotherapy, during that period Christina’s heart function dropped by 26% due to one of the chemotherapy drug, so that drug was dropped from her treatment.

In June 2014, while still undergoing chemotherapy there were lesions detected in her lungs. Oncologists weren’t too concerned as she still had 3 months of chemotherapy treatment to go. Once treatment was finished in early September she again had to undergo further surgery on her knee due to infection and was on anti-biotics (orally and through IV) for 3 more months.

The Oncologist’s believed the lesions in her lungs could have been an infection due to the infection in her knee, so after a month of anti-biotics they conducted a CT scan only to show that the lesions had grown in size, so she was booked in immediately to undergo a biopsy on her right lung, which was conducted via keyhole surgery, they removed 4 lesions durin
g this procedure which 3 of were malignant. They were then worried as the left lung had 2 lesions from date of Diagnosis, so then 4 weeks later they performed an open surgery on her left lung at which time 5 lesions were removed which 3 of were malignant.

3 weeks later another CT scan was conducted, lesions were once again showing up on both lungs, 3 on the right and 2 on the left. They once again conducted open surgery on the right lung where 7 lesions were removed all of which were malignant.

The family has now been told that Christina is at 4th stage of cancer and are offering chemotherapy with no percentage rate of remission and most of all survival.

This has brought the family to the conclusion that getting to Germany is their next step in her fight as undergoing treatment there, she has been given a 95% chance of either over 50% in remission or full remission and even possibly cured.

So help our little battler get the treatment she deserves and a fighting chance at life.

The 5th of March 2015, was the night of nights for the year 11’s and 12’s, the McKinnon Secondary College Formal, held at Brighton International. The gentleman showed their class with sophisticated suits and the ladies, were breathtakingly red carpet ready with elegant and beautifully worn frocks. It was a phenomenal night, filled with eye-catching entrances, extraordinary dance moves and unforgettable memories! Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and the night couldn’t have been made possible without the hard work an effort of those who contributed with helping organise the 2015 Formal - on behalf of everyone who attended, thank you!

9UP in the City

As part of the BYTES program in year 9, all year 9's traveled into Melbourne CBD three times early in term 1 to undertake the Year 9 Urban Project.

The first day in the city saw the students undertake a scavenger hunt. Over 300 year 9s visitied 12 different sites, scouring them for the answers to some often difficult questions. Apart from introducing the students to the layout of the city and public transport options available to get around quickly, students were encouraged to look up from their answer sheets and keep their minds open for possible topics to use for their research project.

Topics this year include capital punishment, smoking, social media addiction, body image and racism.

With topics and groups cemented, the year 9s were in the city on the second and third day observing city-goers, surveying members of the public and interviewing experts such as politicians, university lecturers and business owners relevant to their topic.

As noted in the previous edition of McKinnon News, the year 9s conducted themselves in a manner that was a credit to the school; with many members of the public contacting the school to express their admiration for the conduct of McKinnon students in the city.

The students will be presenting their findings on the nights of 23rd and 24th March at 7pm in the MERC, Year 7 Centre, Music Auditorium and the Library and all year 9 parents and family are warmly invited to attend to see the results of their students hard work.

Super fishes on the day were Will Sharp (7), Sienna Beaves (8), Gabriella Lignos (10) and Max Putamorsi (11) who won multiple events and won the Age Group Champion trophies.

We have a team of 22 that will compete in the SMR finals on Thursday 26th March. We wish them the best of luck.
